It was another disappointing week for Bitcoin, as the price fell from a high of $8,875 last Monday, to a low of $6,499 over the weekend. It has recovered a little since then and at the time of writing the price is $7,307:

March was a very bad month for  the cryptocurrency market, but the signs are positive for the future, according to this article on Mashable

It’s not just the price of cryptocurrencies that has fallen – interest in Bitcoin and altcoins is also declining according to online searches and Google Trends. But that could just be a shift away from interest in general terms and towards more specific topics. Read about it in Bitcoin Magazine

The US financial authorities say that cryptocurrency trading needs to be subject to regulations just as overseas share trading is. The head of the SEC’s trading and markets division described the current cryptocurrency market as resembling the “Wild West”. Read the story on Crypto News Review

A collector who is selling a very rare baseball card is courting Bitcoin millionaires as possible purchasers. The card is a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and is one of only six to have been graded a Mint 9. The seller, a former NFL star, says he happy to accept Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency for the card. One in five US university students say they’ve spent their student loan cash on cryptocurrencies. A survey of 1,000 college students in the US asked if the respondents had used their loan money to buy cryptocurrency. 212 of them confirmed that they had done so. Get the details from The Register

 

The US Postal Service is looking at blockchain as a way to establish digital trust, according to patent documents which have just been published. According to the application, "it is apparent that the tools that provide trust to the users are lacking in their ability to adequately provide a desired level of security." Monero, a digital currency much favoured by those seeking complete privacy, may not offer the cloak of invisibility it promised. A group of researchers have published a paper that points to flaws in the way the currency mixes payments together to shield them from being snooped on, and say that it is possible to extract individual transactions, including those made in the past. Reddit is no longer accepting Bitcoin payments for its premium membership program. It was reported last week that a user of the forums had tried to use Bitcoin to buy a Reddit gold sub as a gift for another user, but was unable to.  ccn.com has the details

 

Russian hotels will accept Bitcoin in exchange for rooms during the World Cup this summer. Visitors to Kaliningrad, one of the cities hosting the matches, are now offering their rooms for cryptocurrencies. Get the details from ccn.com

 

A Canadian man who is selling his home has listed it at a price of 35 bitcoins - $450,000 at the time this was reported. Derryn Shrosbree from Toronto said that he will only take Bitcoins, because he believes in the technology. Get the details from ccn.com

 

The demand for Nvidia’s graphics cards, which are used by crypto miners, means that tech companies can’t get hold of them to build workstations and servers. On the other hand, a Wall Street firm warns that demand for Nvidia’s chips will suffer this year because of waning digital currency mining demand. Wells Fargo Securities lowered its profit forecast for the company because of the dramatic drop in the price of Ethereum so far this year. Read about it on CNBC

 

Google has started to block Chrome extensions that mine cryptocurrency. The technology is mostly used maliciously, to “cryptojack” an unsuspecting user’s computer, using their computing power to mine. Read the story on Wired
