We’re still in a bearish market for Bitcoin as the price fell during last week, reaching a low on Thursday morning of $7,932. It started to pick up again and by the end of the weekend had recovered some of the lost ground, reaching $8,531. It showed a slight downturn this afternoon and at the time of writing is at $8,389.

Bitcoin Predictions

There was the usual mix of Bitcoin Cheerleaders and Bitcoin Bashers this week.

CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, is a fan and he hopes that Bitcoin will one day be the native currency of the internet. Read what he said on ccn

 

A former JP Morgan trader remains confident that the Bitcoin price will reach $20,000 by the end of the year, despite the current bearish market. Danny Masters, who is now the chairman of investment firm Coinshares, says that more work is needed on the structure of the cryptocurrency markets and its tools. Jack Ma, the chairman of Alibaba who is considered to be China’s richest man, thinks that Bitcoin is a bubble although he is in favour of blockchain technology. cnn has the story

 

Wall Street veteran Steve Eisman, best known as one of those who called the sub-prime mortgage market crash correctly a decade ago (as described in the book The Big Short), says he doesn’t see the point of cryptocurrencies. He said, “I don’t see the purpose of it. What value does cryptocurrency actually add? No one’s been able to answer that question for me.” Read the story in the Wall Street Journal

 

Rebutting Warren Buffett

After Warren Buffett called Bitcoin “rat poison squared” and declared it is fundamentally flawed, legendary venture capitalist Fred Wilson hit back saying Buffett had not done his research. The co-founders of a cryptocurrency that was promoted by boxer Floyd Mayweather and record producer DJ Khaled have been indicted for fraud. Governments and Crypto

Seminole County in Florida will accept Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash payments for taxes starting this summer. The payments will be processed by BitPay. Read the story on Finance Magnates

Russia is moving ahead with plans to regulate cryptocurrencies. A framework will go before the country’s Duma for consideration, and if approved will be added to Russia’s civil code. Get the details from Coingeek

 

Major cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex is forcing users to submit tax information which the company will then send to the British Virgin Island government – which may, in turn, exchange the info with the tax authorities in the users’ own country of residence. The New York Stock Exchange’s parent company has been working on an online trading platform which will allow large investors to buy and hold Bitcoin – and Wall Street traders are warming up to the cryptocurrency. Read the story in the New York Times

 

The social investing platform eToro is expanding its operation to the US. The company announced last week that they have opened the waiting list for people in the US who want to trade cryptocurrencies. Get the details from Coindesk

 

Coincheck, the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange that lost $500 million of cryptocoins to hackers, plans to delist trading pairs for cryptocurrencies that are centred around privacy: Monero, zcash and dash. The company announced that it is “not appropriate” to deal with these currencies because the lack of traceability in transactions makes it hard to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. Blockchain News

HSBC says it has for the first time used blockchain technology to make a commercial financial transaction. This enabled it to be completed speedily rather than taking around a week using the normal paper-based processing mediums. The transaction was a letter of credit covering the movement of bulk soybeans to Malaysia from Argentina. Get the details from CNBC

 

Cathay Pacific, the Hong Kong airline giant, is exploring blockchain technology. It wants to use distributed ledger technology for its air miles program. Read the story on ccn

The Securities and Exchange Commission set up a fake ICO website in an attempt to show just how easily investors can be scammed. The site had a whitepaper, celebrity endorsements and info about the team working on the project – all of which were fake. Read about it on Market Watch

Mining News

Two Chinese manufacturers of cryptocurrency mining equipment are planning to float. Their IPOs could raise as much as $1 billion each. Get the details from Reuters

 

Anyone who has tried mining cryptocurrencies will know that it uses a lot of electricity. A new article explains that by using complex economic models, the author has determined that this year crypto mining could use 0.5% of the world’s electricity supply. Science Daily has the story

John McAfee, who developed the anti-virus program that bears his name, has for the past few years been a cryptocurrency activist. Now he says he’s under siege from the US SEC. Read the bizarre story on Finance Magnates

 

Following in the footsteps of Google, search engine Bing has now banned advertising that mentions cryptocurrency. The announcement says the ban is to protect users from scams. Read Bing’s announcement here

 

HTC plans to sell a smartphone that doubles as a cryptocurrency wallet. The Exodus phone act as a storage device for those who want to access their crypto while on the move. Coindesk has the story
