London close: Stocks little changed ahead of FOMC minutes

London stocks ended a touch lower on Wednesday in a pretty listless session, as investors awaited the release of the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's September policy meeting, after the close.
The FTSE 100 finished down 0.06% to 7,533.81, while the pound was 0.02% higher versus the dollar at 1.3204 and 0.30% weaker against the euro at 1.1148.

IG analyst Joshua Mahony said: "A lack of any real notable economic data from Europe today means the market's attention will undoubtedly be geared towards the release of the FOMC minutes, with investors looking out for any clues as to whether a third 2017 hike will transpire. Amid a strengthening economy and a rising chance of Trump passing his tax cuts, there is reason to believe that we will see the role of monetary policy diminish amid a growing influence of government-led stimulus."

The FOMC minutes are due at 1900 BST.

Away from the UK and the US, investors were keeping an eye on Spain after Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont softened his stance on independence on Tuesday, looking to negotiate with Madrid.

Oanda analyst Craig Erlam said: "While Puigdemont remained clear that they had been given a mandate for independence by the Catalan people, his call for talks in order to find a peaceful resolution was the much preferred option at this stage. A declaration of independence on Tuesday could have led to a chain of events that made the situation much worse and seen Puigdemont arrested, likely leading to more unrest."

In corporate news, Smith & Nephew rallied amid speculation that activist investor Elliott Management has built a stake in the company and NMC Health was boosted by an initiation at 'overweight' by CI Capital Holdings.

Homeware retailer Dunelm racked up strong gains after it reported a 9.3% jump in total like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to the end of September, boosted by favourable weather comparatives and "strong" growth across the business, especially online, where LFL sales grew 46% to £19.9m.

Hargreaves Lansdown ticked up after saying it enjoyed a strong start to its new financial year, with solid levels of net new business flows and assets under administration swelling 3.5% over the first quarter or 21% over the same period last year.

Going the other way, Mondi tanked after warning that full-year profits will be below expectations, while Ibstock fell after saying Wayne Sheppard plans to retire in 2018 after 22 years with the group, including the last two as chief executive.

Retailer Next was in the red after Morgan Stanley cut its stance on the stock to 'underweight' from 'equalweight'.

Countryside Properties ticked higher after revealing a 28% rise in home completions for the year to 30 September.

Wood Group also lost a little ground despite being awarded a new multi-million dollar contract by Total.

Recruiter PageGroup was also weaker even as it said profit in the third quarter rose, while subprime lender Provident Financial was under the cosh as Barclays downgraded the stock to 'underweight' ahead of its third-quarter update on Friday.

Europe close: Spanish stocks extend bounce

European stocks finished little changed ahead of the release of the minutes of the US central bank's last policy meeting amid news that the Spanish government has asked officials in Catalonia to explicitly clarify their position.
Overnight, Catalan president Carles Puigdemont said he accepted the popular mandate to push for independence but asked that the effects of the declaration be "suspended to pursue a dialogue over coming weeks without which a mutually agreed solution cannot be found".

The ambiguous wording of that message was a relief for some observers, it left others in doubt as to his true intentions. Indeed, on Wednesday Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy opened the door to the possible suspension of some of Catalonia's devolved powers - by activating but not applying article 155 of the Constitution - should Catalan authorities announce that they had indeed issued a declaration of independence.

Yet in an unexpected twist, it was revealed that Madrid had agreed a deal with the Socialist party to begin study a possible reform of the Consitution in six months' time.

Article 155 requires the central government first issue a formal requirement to the regional authorities in question to return to the country's legal framework.

As of the closing bell, the benchmark Stoxx 600 was flat at 390.15, alongside a gain of 0.17% on the Dax-30 to 12,970.68, although Spain's Ibex 35 added 1.34% to trade at 10,278.40.

In parallel, Spain's benchmark 10-year government bonds were rallying, pushing their yield down by six basis points to 1.64%.

On the economic front, hamornised consumer prices in Spain advanced at a 1.8% clip year-on-year in September (consensus: 1.9%), according to revised data from INE, down from the prior month's reading of 2.0%.

Going the other way, France's harmonised CPI was revised higher from a 1.0% pace on the year to 1.1% (consensus: 1.0%).

Still on the economic calendar for later in the day, US Chicago Fed chair Charles Evans was due to speak on the economy and monetary policy in Switzerland while the minutes of the US central bank's last policy meeting were scheduled to be published at 1900 BST.

US Market Report

US open: Wall Street edges higher ahead of Fed speakers

US stocks are registering slight gains in a light day in terms of fresh economic data with investors waiting on the start of the corporate earnings season later in the week and the release of the minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting.
At 2000 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.22% or 49.02 points ahead to 22,810.09, alongside a rise of 0.15% or 3.91 points to 2,548.65 and a 0.03% gain for the Nasdaq Composite to 6,582.16.

Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, said: "US markets should be a touch more active today, as normal service resumes after Columbus Day.

"Energy stocks should see some support as OPEC continues to air the idea of production cuts, but their appeal to US shale producers to limit their output is an interesting titbit, revealing the increasing worry OPEC has about their inability to meaningfully rebalance the oil market. Ahead of the open, we expect the Dow to start at 22,782, up 21 points from Monday's close."

In terms of Fedspeak, Dallas Fed President Rob Kaplan was to appear in a moderated discussion at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy research after the closing bell on Wall Street.

On the economic front, the National Federation of Independent Business index of small business activity fell to a 10-month low of 103.0 in September from 105.3 the month before, missing expectations for a reading of 105.0.

Pantheon Macroeconomics said: "The sharp drop in the headline index suggests that small firms have reacted much more negatively to the hurricanes than bigger businesses. Most of the damage is in the sentiment numbers, with sales expectations down 12 points, good time to expand down 10 points, and economic expectations down 6 points.

"This drop in sentiment filtered into capex plans, which dropped by 5 points. We expect all these numbers to rebound over the next few months, as the hurricane hit fades."

In corporate news, Procter & Gamble was trading lower ahead of an annual general meeting later during which a proxy vote among shareholders would decide whether Trian Fund Management's chief executive, Nelson Peltz, gets a seat on the board.

Walt Disney was also making headlines after releasing the latest trailer for 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'.

However, it was on Wednesday that things would really really kick off, with earnings reports from the likes of BlackRock and Delta Air Lines together with the latest FOMC minutes.
