Cryptocurrency Weekly News 12 February 2018

What a wild week it was! Bitcoin crashed last Monday (starting just after I sent out this newsletter) from a high of around $9,400 down to $6,000 on Tuesday. It recovered back to $9,000 on Saturday, fell back below $8.000 on Sunday, and today it rose again, reaching $8,855. At the time of writing the Bitcoin price stands at $8,664.

Singapore Airlines has announced plans to launch a loyalty wallet based on the blockchain. The digital loyalty wallet is for its KrisFlyer frequent-flyer program, and will enable travellers to spend their air miles with retail partners easily. Read the story on ccn.com

 

Blockchain is to be used to track the movement of cobalt from the mines in Democratic Republic of Congo on its journey to products such as smartphones and electric cars. The pilot scheme is expected to be launched this year, and its intention is to give manufacturers a way to ensuring the cobalt has not been mined by children. Reuters has the details

 

A week after the South Korean government banned trading cryptocurrencies with anonymous bank accounts, just 10% of the virtual accounts had converted to real-name accounts. The details are on ccn.com

 

After last week’s news that Lloyds bank in the UK and others in the US were banning the use of their credit cards to buy cryptocurrencies, this week Barclays bucked the trend by announcing that customers will be able to continue purchasing digital currencies with credit cards. While some governments are clamping down on cryptocurrency exchanges and banning trading, the president of the European Central Bank has said that European banks could hold positions in Bitcoins in the future as the use of cryptocurrencies permeates into mainstream finance. Who is to blame when a cryptocurrency exchange gets hacked? Forbes thinks it has the answer

 

T-Mobile is being sued by one of its customers for failing to protect his phone number, leading to hackers being able to steal thousands of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency.  He alleges that the company failed to add a security PIN to his account when requested, and that allowed hackers to call the service and request that the number be moved. Once they had control of the number, the hackers used it to drain his accounts. Read the details on ccn.com

Russian engineers have been caught using the supercomputer at the Russian Nuclear Centre to mine Bitcoin. They managed to connect the machine to the internet and use its massive computing power to run mining software. However, their illicit mining was discovered quite quickly and they now face criminal charges. Read the details on ccn.com

 

The list of things you can buy with Bitcoin continues to grow, and this week it was reported that four luxury condos in Washington DC can be paid for fully or in part with the cryptocurrency. Read the story on ccn.com
