Cryptocurrency Weekly News Monday 11 December 2017

Bitcoin demonstrated its volatility during the last week, reaching an all-time high of $17,236, before falling back to $13,920 later in the day. On Saturday it rose again to 16,154 then fell again to $13,101. Sunday saw a steady rise, then this morning it shot up again and at the time of writing the price is $16,356.

For those used to the more sedate pace of the FTSE 100, these rapid rises and falls must look like madness!

One reason for today’s gains, which saw the price surge by over 20% overnight, is that the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) launched its Bitcoin futures trading platform. Read more about it on cryptocoinsnews.com

NiceHash, a crypto-mining marketplace based in Solvenia, was hacked last week and lost around $60m. This was the fourth largest breach in cryptocurrency history. The CEO today answered some questions about the future for NiceHash. Read what he says on wikitribune.com

 

Bitcoin sites are now very popular targets for distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) where a company’s servers are bombarded with so much traffic (generated by bots) that they cannot cope. The surge in Bitcoin prices has meant that online cryptocurrency exchanges and services are becoming the targets of cybercrooks. Read more in this DarkReading article

 

A British man who threw away a hard drive containing Bitcoin back in 2013 says he wants to dig through a landfill site to find it again, because the coins are now worth over $80 million. When he chucked it away they were only worth $130. Read about it in the Independent

 

An airline which has a membership scheme offering an “all you can fly” service will now take payments in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Surf Air will accept the cryptocurrencies for monthly membership and global flights. More information in this Business Insider article

 

At the other end of the scale, a fringe theatre in London, the Southwark Playhouse, now takes donations in Bitcoin. The theatre offers an extensive programme of youth and community activities, funded by donations. Monero is the coin of choice for artists such as Mariah Carey, Motorhead, G-Eazy, Fall Out Boy and Toby Keith. They are among those now accepting Monero as payment for merchandise. Read about it on cryptocoinnews.com

 

Steam, the gaming and digital distribution platform, has announced it is no longer going to take payment in Bitcoin. It started accepted the cryptocoin in April 2016, when one Bitcoin was worth $450.
