London open: Stocks nudge lower; Countrywide slumps again

Stocks in London were just a touch weaker at the start of what's expected to be a fairly quiet day, with traders across the pond celebrating Thanksgiving.
At 0825 GMT, the FTSE was down 0.2% to 6,807.45. Meanwhile, oil prices were little changed as investors continued to look to next week's OPEC meeting in the hope that a production cut will be agreed. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude were down 0.2% to $47.87 a barrel and $48.84, respectively.

Tony Cross, market analyst for TopTradr, said: "Activity could be a little subdued today with the US Thanksgiving holiday evidently limiting the volume of fundamentals we have on the table."

In corporate news, Legal & General pushed up after announcing the sale of its Netherlands business to London-listed pensions firm Chesnara for €160m.

Water company Severn Trent edged higher as it posted a 10.8% jump in interim profits before interest and tax to £299.4m.

Rio Tinto nudged up after chief executive Jean-Sébastien Jacques said the mining giant can boost cash flow by $5m over the next five years by a new "productivity drive".

Shares in Domino's Pizza were looking tasty after it increased its long-term target for expanding its UK store presence and reiterated its guidance for 2016 pre-tax profit.

Pub operator Marston's advanced as it said pre-tax profit and revenue for the year to 1 October grew.

On the downside, Countrywide tumbled as it issued its second profit warning this year, saying core earnings for 2016 would take a hit as a result of the UK's vote to leave the European Union. The stock had already fallen sharply on Wednesday after Chancellor Philip Hammond unveiled a clampdown on estate agent lettings fees.

Pets at Home fell despite reporting a rise in first-half pre-tax profit and revenues and lifting its interim dividend.

HSS Hire was sharply lower as it said it now expects earnings before interest, taxes and amortisation for the year to be above the prior year but below market views.

US Market Report

US close: Stocks close mixed as investors digest raft of data

US markets on Wednesday had a mixed close ahead of the Thangsgiving holiday, with the Dow Jones reaching a record high.
The DJIA closed 59 points higher, while the S&P 500 was up 1.78 points. The Nasdaq Composite was 5.67 points lower as markets digested a raft of data, including the minutes of the November Federal Open Market Committee meeting which revealed officials saw a stronger case for raising rates.

"Some participants noted that recent committee communications were consistent with an increase in the target range for the federal funds rate in the near term or argued that to preserve credibility, such an increase should occur at the next meeting," the minutes stated.

Many officials said a rate rise could be appropriate "relatively soon" data permitting, it said.

Oil closed at almost $48 a barrel after as doubts grew over OPEC's ability to reach a deal on which producers will bear the brunt of planned production cuts.

Key in Wednesday´s data deluge was a 4.8% month-on-month jump in durable goods orders during October to reach $239.4bn.

Although the figures were somewhat distorted by a 94% surge in civilian aircraft orders, economists at Barclays Research saw signs for optimism in the data.

"Neither orders nor shipments have displayed a sustained upward movement that would indicate a near-term acceleration in equipment investment; however, this morning's report could be the first sign of the firming we would need for our investment forecast to be realized. Within the detail of the report, we see broad-based strength," Barclays´s Rob Martin said.

The data saw 10-year US Treasury yields jump eight basis points to 2.40%, pushing the dollar higher by 1.56% to 112.78 against the Japanese yen.

The University of Michigan´s final reading on consumer confidence for November also revealed the extent to which Donald Trump was enjoying the so-called 'honeymoon' period with investors following his surprise election win.

The survey jumped from 87.2 at the end of October to 93.8 for November (consensus: 91.6), according to the final data for the month.

Pharma, Biotech stocks hit

Eli Lilly tumbled after the company said a late-stage trial of a treatment for dementia in patients with Alzheimer's failed to meet its goal.

Shares in Juno Therapeutics fell sharply as the biopharmaceutical company said it has halted its Phase II clinical trial of the JCAR015 drug after two patients suffered cerebral edema earlier this week.

Shares in construction equipment maker Deere & Co were boosted on Wednesday after the company posted an impressive earnings beat in its fourth quarter report.

Net income attributable to Deere dropped to $285.3m, or 90 cents a share, in the fourth quarter ended in October from $351.2 million, or $1.08 a share from last year.

Newspaper Round Up

Thursday newspaper round-up: Autumn Statement, insurers, Barclays, EDF

Philip Hammond delivered his Autumn Statement bearing the scars of Brexit, but determined not to submit meekly to projections of a weaker economy and public finances. The chancellor's strategy raised four important economic questions. What is the likely cost of Brexit? How much headroom has Mr Hammond created for the years ahead? Will he achieve his ambition to improve housing, productivity and regional imbalances? And what is the lasting effect of the vote to leave the EU? - Financial Times
Insurers have hit out at plans to increase insurance premium tax for the third time in 18 months, a move that is expected to raise more than £4bn for the Treasury but which was branded "a hammer blow for the hard pressed" by critics. IPT is added to about 50m car, home, private medical insurance and pet policies every year. - Telegraph

The travel search website Skyscanner has been bought by Chinese counterpart Ctrip.com in a deal worth £1.4bn (US$1.74bn). Ctrip.com International, China's biggest online travel company, said it had agreed to buy Scotland-based Skyscanner Holdings. - Guardian

As the clock ticks down to Black Friday, aggressive promotions on everything from 4K TVs to tablet computers and winter coats could be the last hurrah for shoppers before price hikes in 2017. After bargain-hunting consumers went on the rampage on Black Friday in 2014, fighting in the aisles for cut-price widescreen televisions, last year it was a much tamer affair, as shoppers retreated to the safety of seeking the best bargains online. - Guardian

A top Barclays financier was dismissed after an interview he gave to the Serious Fraud Office as part of a criminal investigation into the bank's Qatari capital-raising was passed to the lender, a London tribunal has been told. Richard Boath, former chairman of financial institutions at Barclays, is set to claim at an employment tribunal that he was dismissed as a direct result of the SFO's decision to hand over a transcript of the interview from 2014 to the bank, his lawyer said. - The Times

EDF has delayed the restart of two nuclear reactors in France after a safety investigation that has thrown the country's state-controlled nuclear industry into crisis. French electricity prices surged by 9 per cent yesterday after the French energy company said that the restart of its 900 megawatt Dampierre 3 and 1,500 megawatt Civaux 2 reactors had been postponed until December 31, a time when electricity demand is close to its annual peak. - The Times
