London open: Stocks flat, pound loses ground as Tory lead over Labour narrows

London stocks were steady in early trade while the pound lost ground as the first poll since the Manchester bomb attack showed the Tory lead over Labour narrowing.
The FTSE 100 was flat at 7,520.84, while the pound was down 0.5% versus the dollar and the euro at 1.2876 and 1.1487 respectively, as the latest YouGov/Times poll showed Labour has slashed the Conservatives' lead to just five points.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said: "Any growth managed by sterling since April has largely been predicated on the assumption that the Conservatives would secure a landslide victory. That this presently doesn't seem to be the case has helped further erode confidence in the currency's current position."

Meanwhile, oil prices reversed heavy losses to trade higher, with West Texas Intermediate up 0.3% to $49.05 a barrel and Brent crude up 0.5% to $51.74. Prices had fallen sharply after the Opec meeting in Vienna resulted in a nine-month extension of the previously agreed 1.8m barrel-a-day production cut.

CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson said; "The rise in oil prices that we'd seen this month in the lead up to this week's OPEC meeting came to an abrupt and shuddering halt yesterday in the wake of the expected announcement that members, as well as non OPEC members, had agreed to extend the cuts agreed in November last year for another 9 months, until March 2018.

"The resultant market sell-off shouldn't really have been too much of a surprise given that having delivered on expectations, markets didn't really have anywhere else to go."

In corporate news, Informa was the top riser after it reiterated its full-year expectations and said first-quarter trading in Global Exhibitions remains strong, while trading in the events business is steady.

The Restaurant Group surged after a first-quarter trading update which showed like-for-like sales fell 1.8%. The update prompted JPMorgan Cazenove to upgrade the stock to 'overweight' from 'neutral', as it said the company "has had a better start to 2017 than many in the market may have expected".

Hammerson nudged up after saying it has exchanged contracts for the sale of two retail parks to clients of BMO Real Estate Partners for £80m, while Spirax-Sarco Engineering rallied as it agreed to buy US-based electrical products provider Chromalox from Irving Place Capital for a cash-free, debt-free consideration of $415m (£319m).

FTSE 250 hospital group Spire Healthcare was also in the black as it said trading from 1 January to 25 May has been in line with expectations and reiterated its 2017 guidance.

On the downside, Intertek was in the red despite posting a 14% jump in revenues for the first four months of the year and saying it was on track to deliver its 2017 targets.

There are no major UK data releases due but in the US, first-quarter GDP is at 1330 BST.

US Market Report

US close: Nasdaq hits new record as tech and retail lead way

Investors chased the Nasdaq and S&P to new record closings highs on Thursday ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend, with the tech sector driving the gains to offset falling oil prices as Opec's production cut disappointed.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 0.34% higher at 21,082.95, while the S&P 500 finished higher for a sixth successive day to set a new record, rising 0.44% to 2,415.07 and the Nasdaq Composite similarly ascended 0.69% to a new peak of 6,205.26.

While Europe remains becalmed US markets clock up new highs, despite the fact that European data has been much stronger of late than its US counterpart, observed market analyst Chris Beauchamp at IG.

"Amazon and Google find themselves locked in a race for $1000; tech firms continue to leave the old economy far behind, with momentum continuing to drive the sector higher," he said.

"In a bull market, you buy the strongest performing assets - with the Nasdaq 100 nearly a fifth higher year-to-date, it is clear that momentum lies here, leaving the staid S&P 500 and FTSE 100 far behind."

Markets also began the day on the front foot on the back of a week of gains and after the previous day's minutes from the Federal Reserve meeting that showed most members were in favour of a rate hike "soon" as long as the economy continues to rebound from first-quarter weakness.

What little data there was on Thursday was not enough to disrupt the positive mood, with initial weekly US unemployment claims rising by just 1,000 to 234,000, better than expected and marking a fourth straight week below 240,000.

That led Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics to muse that: "it's starting to look more like a shift in trend rather than just noise, but we still need more data to be sure".

Meanwhile, America's deficit in its trade in goods with the rest of the world widened by 3.8% to $67.6bn, according to the Census Bureau. Economists' forecasts were calling for a smaller shortfall of -$64.0bn.

Oil prices fell after Opec's agreement to extend an earlier 1.8m-barrel-a-day production cut by nine months did not seem long enough to satisfy oil traders, even if Saudi Arabian oil minister Khalid al-Falih said any deeper cuts were unnecessary.

West Texas Intermediate was down 5.2% to $48.68 a barrel and Brent crude was 5.0% lower at $51.27.

Analyst Neil Wilson at ETX Capital said a nine-month extension "just isn't enough to really lift oil prices as we'll continue to see US shale fill the gap" and with the oil cartel having said they'd do whatever it takes they were now "looking a bit toothless".

"Instead of deepening cuts they are continuing to tinker at the margins by curbing production by around 1.8m b/d along with several non-OPEC members. It also looks like no new non-OPEC members are joining the curbs, which would have helped."

Elsewhere among stocks, several members of the embattled retailer sector impressed, with Best Buy shooting higher as investors cheered stronger than expected profits, improved outlook and an unexpected rise in its like-for-like sales from the consumer electronic retailer, while Sears posted its first quarterly profit in two years sending its shares flying.

Discount retailer Dollar Tree was also trading on the front foot despite disappointing investors on most of its main financial metrics, including LFLs.

Hewlett Packard on the other hand was trading lower even after it reported the first simultaneous growth in its sales of printers and PCs since 2010.

Newspaper Round Up

Friday newspaper round-up: China, RBS, bitcoin

China's structural reforms will not be enough to arrest its rising debt and another credit rating downgrade for the country is possible unless it gets its ballooning borrowing in check, two officials at Moody's ratings agency have said. Doubling down on comments earlier this week that China's financial strength will be eroded because of huge corporate and household debt, Moody's said the country's "vast reform agenda" would not be enough to prevent borrowing from weighing on economic growth. - Guardian
A group of "diehard" shareholders determined to see the former Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive Fred Goodwin in court are refusing to accept a settlement in their £700m legal claim against the bank. The state-backed lender has offered about £200m, or 82p per share held by investors, in an attempt to avoid a case that would see Goodwin take the stand on either 8 or 9 June. - Guardian

GCHQ has demanded that directors start taking charge of cyber security, warning that they are "devolving responsibility" for protecting businesses from hackers. Ciaran Martin, the head of the agency's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said it is unacceptable for boards to plead ignorance about the threat from cyber attacks. - Telegraph

Theresa May's manifesto risks losing the Conservatives their image as the party of business, The Daily Telegraph can disclose, after Britian's small companies overwhelmingly rejected their policies and questioned the lack of costing in the policy diktat. A vanishingly small proportion of companies support the manifesto, while the Prime Minister's mantra of "strong and stable leadership" achieves only modest backing. - Telegraph

The political fallout has been unrelenting since the collapse of the longest running criminal trial in the history of the Irish state. Judge John Aylmer directed the jury in Dublin's central criminal court this week to acquit Sean Fitzpatrick, former chairman and chief executive of Anglo Irish bank, of charges of false accounting and concealing loans. - The Times

London close: FTSE mired in range trade as oil majors drop after Opec pledge

Shares in London flickered around their starting levels for most of the day, mimicking the disappointing pattern of range-bound trade also seen among Europe's main indices.
The FTSE 100 closed up by 0.04% to 7,517.17, while the FTSE 250 was higher by 0.09% to 19,967.58. The Euro Stoxx 50, Dax and Cac 40 on the other hand ended slightly lower.

"The major indices in Europe have been flickering in between positive and negative territory but the common theme is a small trading range," said David Madden of CMC Markets UK.

Chris Beauchamp at IG also noted the sideways trade.

"In a bull market, you buy the strongest performing assets with the Nasdaq 100 nearly a fifth higher year-to-date, it is clear that momentum lies here, leaving the staid S&P 500 and FTSE 100 far behind," he said.

Wall St began positively after the US Fed last night released minutes from its May meeting that showed it wanted to make sure the recovery continued before lifting rates again.

In commodities the spot prices for gold, silver and copper were ahead, but both classes of crude fell as Opec extended its production cuts for a well flagged nine-months.

This disappointed some who were looking for a larger extension, and encouraged others to take profits. Shares of major oil companies Shell and BP were heavily down.

"We see a better than 50/50 chance Opec pre-announces additional cuts before the next scheduled meeting in November," said Jasper Lawler at London Capital Group.

If oil chat dominated the afternoon session, it was the fall in the UK's first-quarter GDP growth to 0.2%, from a previous estimate of 0.3% and 0.7% in the last quarter of 2016.

"There's a strong likelihood that growth will pick up in the second quarter, but whether robust growth can be sustained further ahead remains highly uncertain," said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit.

Elsewhere, British Bankers Association data showed British high street banks approved fewer mortgages in April from March, but consumer lending via credit cards bounced back.

In corporate news, progress in London was hampered by a catalogue of stocks going ex-dividend, including Bunzl, Capita, Carnival, DCC, Morrisons, Whitbread and Worldpay.

On the list of FTSE 100 gainers, consumer goods, high-street retail and pharmaceuticals shares tended to do well, while banks, commercial property and insurers congregated among fallers.

BT retreated as Exane BNP Paribas downgraded the stock to 'underperform' from 'neutral', saying the underlying business appears to be "teetering on the edge".

British Land and Oxford Properties confirmed they had completed the sale of The Leadenhall Buildinhg to C C Land.

Aviva announced it would begin a share buy-back of its ordinary shares for a maximum consideration of up to £300m.

United Utilities fell as it upped its dividend 1.1% after a year where revenue and profit both leaked modestly lower but it remained confident of meeting its long-term targets.

3i got a boost as Canaccord Genuity bumped up its price target on the stock to 975p from 875p following strong full-year results earlier this month.

US Market Report

US open: Wall Street setting new records ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Investors are pushing the main Wall Street averages to fresh record highs ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend, with the much maligned retailers leading the charge.
At 1542 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up by 0.39% or 79,92 points to 21,092.06, while the S&P 500 is adding 0.45% or 10.89 points to 2,415.28 and the Nasdaq Composite 36.51 points to 6,199.42.

Worth noting, Memorial Day is typically associated with the summer lull in trading volumes.

On Wednesday, the S&P 500 closed at a record, while the Dow and the Nasdaq closed at their second-highest levels ever after minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting showed most members were in favour of a rate hike "soon" as long as the economy continues to rebound from first-quarter weakness.

Linked to the above - possibly - the latest tally for initial weekly US unemployment claims rose by just 1,000 to 234,000, marking a fourth straight week below 240,000.

That led Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics to muse that: "so it's starting to look more like a shift in trend rather than just noise, but we still need more data to be sure.

"Low and falling claims numbers don't guarantee faster payroll growth, but they are consistent with robust increases, at least, and we expect sustained 200K-plus gains over the next few months, pushing unemployment down to new lows and scaring the Fed."

In the background, oil prices came under selling pressure even after OPEC members agreed to extend an earlier 1.8m-barrel-a-day production cut by nine months, although Saudi Arabian oil minister Khalid al-Falih said any deeper cuts were unnecessary.

West Texas Intermediate was down 0.73% to $50.99 a barrel and Brent crude was 0.6% lower at $53.65.

Oanda analyst Craig Erlam said: "It would appear a nine month extension with the potential for deeper cuts was almost fully priced in so when the statements were made, there was nowhere left for prices to go but lower.

Meanwhile, on the economic front, America's deficit in its trade in goods with the rest of the world widened by 3.8% to $67.6bn, according to the Census Bureau.

Economists' forecasts were calling for a smaller shortfall of -$64.0bn

US retail and wholesale inventories both shrank by 0.3% month-on-month in April.

From a sector standpoint, the biggest gains were being seen in the following industrial groups: Specialty Retailers (2.79%), Clothing & Accessories (1.30%), Restaurants (1.29%) and General Retailers (1.23%).

Shares in Best Buy shot higher as investors cheered stronger than expected profits, improved outlook and an unexpected rise in its like-for-like sales from the consumer electronic retailer.

Sears posted its first quarterly profit in two years sending its shares flying.

Discount retailer Dollar Tree was also trading on the front foot despite disappointing investors on most of its main financial metrics, including LFLs.

Hewlett Packard on the other hand was trading lower even after it reported the first simultaneous growth in its sales of printers and PCs since 2010.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: BT Group, National Grid, Acacia Mining

Exane BNP Paribas downgraded shares of BT Group from 'neutral' to 'underperform'.
At the same time, the broker cut its target by 15% to 260p.

Exane said BT's underlying business was "teetering on the edge" and that it had identified more than a dozen factors - excluding regulations - which would drag on its operating profits and free cash flows more than markets were anticipating.

"In our view the market is mispricing BT as they transition from growth to decline," Exane said.

As far as the regulatory pressures bearing down on the company were concerned, Exane said that with Ofcom breathing down its neck BT faced the prospect of upwards pressures on its capital outlays just as consumer spending was plateauing.

The dividend also needed to be rebased by more than the company had hinted thus far.

"On our new estimates they face a £800m cash shortfall over 3 years to fund just 2% growth," analysts Sam McHugh, San Dhillon, Kohulan Paramaguru and Alexandre Roncier.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs boosted their target for shares of National Grid after rejigging their valuation methods for the company, but said the premium they were trading at was not justified, leading them to reiterate their 'sell' recommendation.

The investment bank said the company's allowed regulated returns would diminish as the average 10-year trailing iBoxx index to which they were indexed increasingly reflected the then current interest rate environment.

That would offset the benefits for the company from investing in its asset base, which together with rising interest costs and declining profits from its other businesses would result in muted earnings per share growth over coming years.

Nonetheless, the 12-month target was increased from 855p to 946p, albeit partially reflecting higher trading multiples for its regulated rivals, analysts Ajay Patel and Alberto Gandolfi said.

A committee of experts appointed by Tanzanian President John Magufuli stated on Wednesday that Acacia had not fully declared all of the minerals contained in the concentrate and so its export ban would remain in place.

"This is not a laughing matter," said Investec, "but it sounds like someone in the committee has missed a decimal point somewhere along the line. Alternative explanations don't bear thinking."

But Jonathan Guy at broker Numis said that given the scale of production at the mines, he did not believe that the accusation of a tenfold understatement is credible.

"However, it provides a further indication of how problematic the relationship between the company and the government has become," he said, but expressing confidence the company and government will resolve the dispute before too long.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Tyler Broda downgraded Acacia's shares to 'underperform' from 'sector perform' as he felt the developments may even put the miner's local operating license under pressure.

Broda felt the Tanzanian accusations were "highly unusual" and "metallurgically questionable" and therefore further investigations "may - in theory - provide some relief for the company although it is unclear what next steps can be taken to clarify this matter".

London open: Stocks little changed ahead of GDP data

London stocks were little changed in early trade as investors digested the latest Federal Reserve minutes and awaited first-quarter economic growth data for the UK.
At 0840 BST, the FTSE 100 was up 0.1% to 7,519.13, while the pound was up 0.1% versus the dollar at 1.2988.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said: "Part of the reason the FTSE is lacking momentum this morning is likely the gains made by cable, which jumped 0.3% after Wednesday evening's Fed meeting minutes revealed that the central bank sees it as 'prudent' to make sure the USA's first quarter slowdown was just a blip before going ahead with its next - still likely June - rate hike.

"Nevertheless, the FTSE already spiked to an intraday peak of 7540 before settling back, meaning come closing time there could well be another broken record - that is, dependent on how the day's key events pan out. The first test is second glimpse at the UK's Q1 growth, which arrived last month at a lacklustre 0.3%. Analysts aren't expecting a revision, a situation that in theory would soften up sterling and, therefore, work in the FTSE's favour."

The latest minutes from the Fed released on Wednesday revealed that most members think a rate hike should happen soon as long as the economy continues to rebound from first-quarter weakness. The minutes also suggested the central bank members were in agreement on how the Fed can unwind its $4.5trn balance sheet. It's understood the Fed will implement caps on how much it will allow to drop off the balance sheet without reinvestment each month.

On the data front, BBA mortgage approvals are at 0930 BST, along with the first-quarter gross domestic product release.

Meanwhile, oil prices advanced ahead of the Opec meeting in Vienna, amid expectations of a nine-month extension to coordinated production cuts. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude were up 0.9% to $51.81 a barrel and $54.47, respectively.

In corporate news, Central and Eastern European-focused low-cost airline Wizz Air flew higher as it reported record profit for the year to the end of March despite "challenging" conditions including low fares and increasing fuel prices. FTSE 100 peers easyJet and International Consolidated Airlines Group were also high risers.

Halfords gained ground despite reporting a drop in full-year profit, as it lifted its dividend and said cash generation remained strong.

Card Factory also advanced after saying it made "a good start to the year" as first-quarter like-for-like store sales were at the upper end of its targeted range of 1% to 3% growth.

On the downside, water company United Utilities fell as it upped its dividend 1.1% after a year where revenue and profit both leaked modestly lower but it remained confident of meeting its long-term targets.

Payment systems provider PayPoint was also in the red despite hailing "good growth" in its core retail networks as gross revenue rose 3.6% in the year to the end of March, while BT Group was weaker after a downgrade to 'underperform' at Exane BNP Paribas.

Petrofac shares plunged to their lowest since 2009 after suspending chief operating officer Marwan Chedid as the company is investigated by the Serious Fraud Office over bribery and money laundering allegations.

Pets at Home lost ground despite reporting 1.5% growth in like-for-like sales last year thanks to its vet services businesses.

Tate & Lyle was lower even as it posted an 85% jump in full-year pre-tax profit, underpinned by a weaker pound and a solid performance from both divisions.

B&M European traded lower despite saying annual profits rose 26%, while Inchcape declined after it said group revenue rose 18% at actual currency and 8.1% at constant currency in the fourth months to the end of April.

Morrisons, Bunzl, and Capita were all on the back foot as their stock went ex-dividend.

US Market Report

US close: Markets finish higher as investors mull Fed minutes

Wall Street's main market averages finished in the green on Wednesday, with Treasury yields slipping after the release of the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's May meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 0.36% at 21,012.41, while the S&P 500 finished 0.25% higher at 2,404.39 and the Nasdaq 100 was firmer by 0.47% at 5,730.30.

In bond markets, the US benchmark 10-year note yield was down after the release of the Fed minutes, to trade at 2.255%, while the two-year yield was at 1.273%, after both traded higher before the release.

Bond yields move inversely to prices.

The minutes suggested the central bank members were in agreement on how the Fed can unwind its $4.5trn balance sheet.

It's understood the Fed will implement caps on how much it will allow to drop off the balance sheet without reinvestment each month.

There were doubts over how soon such a plan could be implemented, however, with analysts at Rabobank saying: "recent events in Washington DC support our view that the Fed is not going to hike more than twice this year.

"As it is becoming increasingly difficult to make fiscal policy, and Trumpgate is likely to continue to hang over the markets like Damocles' sword, we do not think that the Fed's intended third hike will materialise this year.

"Note that this could also delay the Fed's plan to reduce its reinvestments until next year."

Overnight, Moody's downgraded China's long-term credit rating by one notch to A1 from Aa3 but also changed its ratings outlook to stable from negative.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures were down after the Department of Energy reported a larger than expected decline in US oil stockpiles, with prices last falling 0.51% to $51.21 per barrel.

Existing home sales in the States fell 2.3% on the month in April to reach an annualised rate of 5.57m, against a consensus for 5.7m.

Home prices in the US rose at a 0.6% month-on-month clip in March according to FHFA, as expected.

On the corporate front, stock in Bunge finished up 1.04% on news that Glencore had approached the grain trader about a potential takeover.

Hardware retailer Lowe's tumbled 3% after its first-quarter earnings missed analysts' expectations, but chip maker Nvidia was on the front foot by 1.12% following a report that Japan's SoftBank racked up a $4bn stake in the company.

Jewellery retailer Tiffany was knocked 8.71% lower after reporting a weaker-than-expected 3% drop in global like-for-like sales.

Women's fashion retailer Chico's FAS dropped 11.27% amid heavy trading volumes after disappointed investors got rid of their shares following the company's first fiscal quarter results and outlook.

Newspaper Round Up

Thursday newspaper round-up: RBS, Opec, Glencore

The TUC has urged the next government to take action to boost pay as it warned that borrowing to top up wages was poised to breach the record levels hit just before the financial crisis of a decade ago. Frances O'Grady, the TUC general secretary, expressed alarm at the steady increase in unsecured debt - which excludes mortgages - and called for a higher minimum wage and an end to the tough pay curbs in the public sector. - Guardian
British car manufacturing went into reverse in April, with production falling at the fastest rate in more than two and a half years. A total of 122,116 cars rolled off UK production lines last month, 18% fewer than in April 2016, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). - Guardian

Online wedding company Prezola has received a multi-million pound investment from the Business Growth Fund as it looks to branch out into mobile app technology. The wedding gift list service, which also allows customers to create customisable wedding websites, has received a £3m backing from the BGF, which invests in small and mid-sized firms in the UK. - Telegraph

A£200m settlement between Royal Bank of Scotland and thousands of aggrieved shareholders has been hit by further delays after it emerged that lawyers were having difficulty tracking down some investors to ask them to agree to the deal. A High Court trial into RBS's £12bn rights issue at the height of the financial crisis has now been adjourned until June 7 after Jonathan Nash QC, who is acting for the investors, said there had been "logistical" problems contacting some of the claimant shareholders to put a settlement offer to them. - Telegraph

Opec oil ministers will meet in Vienna today amid claims that some members are cheating on production quotas, undermining efforts to drive prices higher by extending a deal to curb output. As officials from the 13 member states gathered for a biannual policy meeting in the Austrian capital, there was mounting tension over suspicions that some countries in the organisation, which pumps a third of the world's oil, are failing to honour their commitments under an agreement signed with other exporters in November to slash supply by 1.8 million barrels a day. - The Times

The senior independent director at Glencore was rebuked by shareholders yesterday over the commodity group's unusual board structure and opaque pay arrangements. Fourteen per cent of investors who cast a vote voted against the re-election of Peter Grauer, who is also the chairman of Bloomberg, while 5 per cent vetoed the re-election of Tony Hayward, the ex-BP chief who chairs Glencore. - The Times
