London open: Stocks rise as investors get to grips with Brexit

UK equities rose on Wednesday as investors came to terms with the reality of Brexit.
Prime Minster David Cameron has said he will not invoke Article 50 of the 2007 Treaty of Lisbon that starts formally the process of Britain's exit from the EU. The next Prime Minister who takes over from Cameron in September will need to decide whether to trigger Article 50. Boris Johnson and Theresa May are seen as likely contenders for Prime Minister while Jeremy Hunt, Stephen Crabb and Nicky Morgan have said they would consider running for the top job.

"With no likelihood of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty getting triggered any time soon it seems that the status quo isn't likely to change in the short - term, with an emergency EU Summit scheduled in September being pencilled in for a new UK Prime Minister to submit plans for next steps," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

"Whilst that doesn't remove the uncertainty with respect to the eventual outcome it also means that markets are going to have plenty of time to settle into their new found reality and equilibrium, as the extra time allotted could well see cooler heads prevail as some of the temperature is taken out of what still remains quite a tense situation."

The pound also continued to regain strength against the dollar, rising 0.39% to $1.3396.

At the same time oil prices gained on looming strikes by Norwegian oil and gas workers, which could help ease the global supply glut. Brent crude rose 1.01% to $49.08 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate jumped 1.19% to $48.43 per barrel.

On the economic data front, UK house prices rose 0.2% in June compared to a month ago, Nationwide said. It marked the same rate of growth as the previous month and was better than the 0% expected by analysts.

German consumer sentiment is set to improve next month but uncertainty following the UK's decision to leave the European Union could take its toll, according to data from market research group GfK. Its forward-looking consumer sentiment indicator rose to 10.1 going into July from 9.8, beating expectations for it to remain unchanged.

Still to come, US personal consumption expenditure figures at 1330 BST, US pending home sales at 1500 BST and the Department of Energy's US weekly crude oil inventories data at 1530 BST.

In company news, shares in Dixons Carphone fell even as the company reported a 17% increase in full year profit and said it was optimistic of its chances post-Brexit as the largest player in the UK market. The group also announced its expansion in the US in a joint venture with Sprint mobile network.

Maintenance group Homeserve advanced as it said it was "well positioned" to meet the challenges posed by Britain's exit from the EU, adding that growth prospects remained "strong".

Pub group Greene King edged slightly higher as it reported a surge in full-year profit and revenue, partly thanks to its acquisition of Spirit Pub Company, but cautioned that Brexit was likely to hit consumer confidence in the near term.

Travel and leisure stocks declined, including TUI, IAG and easyJet, after a gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk international airport killed 36 people.

Europe open: Stocks in the black as Brexit woes set aside for now

European stocks rose in early trade as investors put their concerns about Brexit aside - at least for now - and bet that central banks would implement further stimulus measures.
At 0900 BST, the benchmark Stoxx Europe 600 index was up 1.2%, Germany's DAX was 0.8% higher and France's CAC 40 was 1.1% firmer.

In London, the FTSE 100 was 1.6% higher while the more domestically-focused FTSE 250 was 1.1% stronger.

At the same time, oil prices were in the black. West Texas Intermediate was up 1.2% at $48.41 a barrel and Brent crude was 1% higher at $49.08.

In currency markets, the pound was trading at $1.3391 compared to $1.3341 late on Tuesday.

Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor, said: "Investors, who are still trying to work out whether current market levels pose and opportunity or a threat, are coming down firmly on the side of opportunity with equities across the UK and Europe up strongly for a second day.

"With global central banks all trying to reassure markets, prices are stabilising and volatility is falling. However, it is still very early in the process and significant political and market risks remain, so we may start to see some investors start to sell the rally, which could see markets pare back some of the gains."

Prime Minister David Cameron was in Brussels on Tuesday meeting with his European counterparts to discuss the issue of Brexit. The leaders of the other 27 EU members will meet again on Wednesday without Cameron.

Analysts attributed the positive tone to the fact that Article 50 was not likely to be invoked any time soon, meaning that financial markets have some breathing space.

CMC Markets' Michael Hewson said: "With no likelihood of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty getting triggered any time soon it seems that the status quo isn't likely to change in the short - term, with an emergency EU Summit scheduled in September being pencilled in for a new UK Prime Minister to submit plans for next steps.

"Whilst that doesn't remove the uncertainty with respect to the eventual outcome it also means that markets are going to have plenty of time to settle into their new found reality and equilibrium."

In corporate news, travel and leisure stocks such as TUI and Thomas Cook were under the cosh following a terror attack on Tuesday at Istanbul's Ataturk airport that left 36 people dead and more than 140 wounded.

Elsewhere, Bunzl was on the front foot after the distribution company said group revenue for the half year was expected to increase by 9% at actual exchange rates and 6% at constant rate, largely due to the impact of acquisitions.

Dixons Carphone was in the red despite reporting a 17% jump in profit for the year to April.

On the macroeconomic calendar, data out earlier from market research firm GfK showed German consumer sentiment is set to improve next month, although uncertainty following the UK's decision to leave the European Union could take its toll.

Its forward-looking consumer sentiment indicator rose to 10.1 going into July from 9.8, beating expectations for it to remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, the economic expectations sub-index rose 9.7 points to 18, marking the third increase in a row and the highest level since June 2015.

Income expectations were at their highest level since German reunification, with the indicator up 7.8 points to 59.6.

Still to come, eurozone consumer confidence is at 1000 BST while Germany CPI is at 1300 BST. In the US, personal income and spending is at 1330 BST and pending home sales are at 1500 BST.

US Market Report

US close: Stocks end higher as US GDP revised higher

US equities closed higher on Tuesday as oil prices jumped and first quarter economic growth data came in better than expected.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.57%, the S&P 500 edged up 1.78% and the Nasdaq grew 2.12%.

Oil prices rose on bargain hunting after a two-day slide triggered by Britain's vote to leave the European Union last Friday. The threat of strikes by Norwegian oil and gas workers also helped to ease the global supply glut. West Texas Intermediate crude increased 3.2% to $47.89 per barrel and Brent climbed 3.2% to $47.89 per barrel.

In economic data, the Commerce Department said first quarter US gross domestic product increased 1.1%, beating consensus expectations of 1% growth and higher than the previously-estimated 0.8% increase. In the final quarter of 2015, real GDP rose 1.4%.

"Fed Chair Janet Yellen will be largely content with the GDP figures released today that reveal a US economy in decent health amid swirling global uncertainty," said Dennis de Jong, managing director at UFX.com.

"The UK's decision to vote to leave the EU last week has triggered market turmoil not seen since the dark days of 2008 and, while the US is likely to avoid bearing too much of the global burden, a strengthening dollar against the pound will have some knock-on effects."

At 2106 BST the dollar was down 0.97% against the pound, down 0.56% against the euro but up 0.62% versus the yen.

US house price growth slowed just a touch in April, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller National Home Price Index, and the outlook is uncertain following Brexit and ahead of the US elections. The 20-City Composite Index was up 5.4%, down from 5.5% in March but in line with economists' estimates.

US consumer confidence improved in June with the Conference Board's sentiment index rising to 98.0 from 92.4 the previous month, exceeding analysts' estimates for a reading of 93.5.

In corporate news, ReachLocal shares surged 174.70% after Gannett announced that it was buying the digital marketing company for $4.60 a share.

Shares of Tesla Motors rose after the electric car maker said on Monday that it will form a two-person committee of independent board members to evaluate its buyout offer for SolarCity.

Regulus Therapeutics plunged after the biopharmaceutical company late Monday said the Food and Drug Administration has placed its investigational new drug for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection on clinical hold.

LendingClub Corp. edged higher after fintech company said it was cutting almost 200 jobs.

Newspaper Round Up

Wednesday newspaper round-up: Pensions, Vodafone, BHS, Port Talbot

There was something different about David Cameron's last EU supper. The mood was good-tempered, the jibes few and far between, the atmosphere sober but for the occasional laugh. Emerging from the British prime minister's three-hour summit farewell on Tuesday, one northern European leader remarked that given the circumstances it could have been far worse - "but only nice things can be said about the dead". - Financial Times
Six months ago, most City of London bankers had a long list of regulations they wanted to scrap. But the Brexit vote has changed all that. As the banks recover from the shock of the referendum, they are drawing up plans to lobby politicians to keep financial regulation intact and to ensure the sector suffers as little disruption as possible from leaving the EU. - Financial Times

The travails of Britain's private pensions industry may seem like a sideshow amid the turmoil of the last week, but in case you missed it, they just got a whole lot worse. And as it happens, these difficulties are an almost perfect example of what's going wrong more widely in financial markets. It's all about falling interest rates. Having been in slow decline for twenty years or more, they took a dramatic lurch down during the financial crisis, when the unconventional monetary policy of zero rates and quantitative easing became the order of the day. - Telegraph

Vodafone, one of Britain's biggest companies, has warned that it could relocate its head office outside the UK if the negotiations for a post-Brexit Britain do not give it freedom of movement across the EU for people, capital and goods. The telecoms company, which employs nearly 110,000 people around the world and some 13,000 in the UK, said it would take "whatever decisions are appropriate" once the outcome of the negotiations was known. - Guardian

The man who introduced Dominic Chappell to Sir Philip Green, thereby facilitating the controversial takeover of BHS for £1, has said he "never thought in a million years" that Chappell would end up running the department store chain. Paul Sutton, who has a spent conviction for fraud in France, revealed to MPs in a committee session on Tuesday that Chappell had initially been his driver when he was working on his own deal to buy BHS. - Guardian

Lord Blunkett has been appointed Heathrow's new "employment tsar" as the airport pledges to create thousands of "British jobs for British workers". The former cabinet minister will lead an 18-month taskforce established by Heathrow to make sure that most of the 77,000 jobs directly created by an expanded airport go to "home-grown" talent, The Times has learnt. - The Times

Edmund Truell, the pension scheme rescuer and private equity investor, has emerged as the latest potential saviour of the British steel industry. The outspoken City figure has opened talks with Tata Steel, the Pensions Regulator and the Treasury over a plan aimed at saving the Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales and a dozen other steel processing facilities around the UK. - The Times

London close: Stocks gain but analysts expect post-Brexit selloff to continue

London stocks closed in positive territory on Tuesday after two days of falls in the aftershock of Brexit.
The FTSE ended up 2.45% to 6,128.72 and the pound rose 0.65% against the dollar at $1.33.

"Today has seen a welcome reprieve from the incessant fear and risk aversion that has dominated financial markets since Friday's unexpected referendum result," IG market analyst Joshua Mahony said.

"The question on everyone's lips is whether we have seen an end to the selling, with many seeing current prices as an opportunity to buy their favourite firms at a temporary discount. This selloff is unlikely to be over and perhaps the only thing that will truly raise risk appetite for good will be a faint glimmer of hope that we could see a second referendum."

In the latest news following Britain's decision to leave the European Union, chancellor George Osborne reiterated that the government would have to increase taxes and cut spending to deal with the economic fallout of Brexit.

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said Britain must "clarify its position" on the terms of its departure from the EU as soon as possible. He said there would be no informal talks with the UK before its invoked Article 50 of the 2007 Treaty of Lisbon that starts formally the exit process.

"I want the UK to clarify its position. Not today, not tomorrow at 9am, but soon. We cannot allow ourselves to remain in a prolonged period of uncertainty," he said.

Meanwhile, an industry survey showed UK retail sales growth slowed ahead of last Thursday's EU referendum. The Confederation of British Industry's monthly retail sales balance for June fell to +5 from +7 in May. The survey was conducted between 26 May and 14 June.

In the US, the Commerce Department said first quarter gross domestic product increased 1.1%, beating consensus expectations of 1% growth and higher than the previously-estimated 0.8% increase.

Oil prices advanced with Brent crude up 1.2% to $47.76 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate up 1.5% to $47.06 per barrel. Prices were supported by the possibility that oil and gas workers in Norway could go on strike from Saturday if they do not agree a wage deal.

On the corporate front, Legal & General shares jumped after it announced the appointment of a new group chairman on Tuesday, confirming former Whitehall mandarin John Kingman as taking the up the post.

Housebuilders recovered from the initial shock of Britain's vote to leave the European Union even as Goldman Sachs said it now expects new build volumes in the UK to drop 10% and house prices to fall by 2% and 5% in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Shares in Taylor Wimpey and British Land rose.

Miners were lower as the price of the gold fell after investors sought a safe haven in the two days since the UK voted to leave the EU. Fresnillo and Randgold Resources were among the fallers.

Online grocer Ocado gained as the company said revenues and earnings grew in the first half of the year, reporting gross sales of £582.9m for the 24 weeks to 15 May on Tuesday, a 13.9% rise on £511.9m in the comparative period last year.

Europe close: Markets attempt to clean up after Brexit

Markets in Europe finished up on Tuesday and the two major currencies gained some ground, as investors picked up the pieces in the wake of Friday's market-shattering decision by the UK to exit the European Union.
The benchmark Stoxx Europe 600 was last up 2.58%, while Germany's DAX was 1.84% higher and France's CAC had added 2.55%.

In London, the FTSE 100 had picked itself up by 2.64%, while the more domestically-focused FTSE 250 - the worst hit by the Brexit vote - added 3.58%.

In Italy the FTSE MIB was ahead by 3.3% as that country's government considered a €40bn capital injection for banks.

The Stoxx 600 banks index, which has taken a hammering in the previous two sessions, was last up 2.36%.

Oil prices also advanced during the session - Brent crude was last ahead by 1.46% at $47.86 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate was up 1.72% at $47.14.

The lingering possibility of a strike in Norway underpinned crude prices throughout the day, as workers on oil and gas fields in the country could walk out from Saturday if a wage deal is not agreed.

On the currency front, sterling was making a small recovery after hitting fresh 31-year lows on Monday - it was last 0.65% up at $1.3311 per £1.00.

FXTM's chief market strategist, Hussein Sayed, said earlier that there seemed to be very little news to support the currency at present.

"David Cameron's proposal yesterday not to trigger Article 50 will only lead to a prolonged period of uncertainty, exposing the pound to more downside risk.

"I would say another 5-10% drop from current levels can't be ruled out in the next couple of weeks."

The euro was last trading up 0.19% at $1.1046,after hitting a three-month low against the greenback amid the Brexit fallout.

Chancellor George Osborne said on Tuesday that the UK will have to cut spending and raise taxes in response to Brexit, as EU leaders met in Brussels.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Britain must "clarify its position" on the terms of its departure as soon as possible.

Juncker said in a speech to the European Parliament that a prompt statement of the type of deal Britain wanted was necessary to end uncertainty.

He reasserted the EU's position, supported by France and Germany, that there would be no informal talks with the UK before it invoked Article 50.

"We can not allow a long period of uncertainty.

"There can be no secret negotiations. No notification, no negotiation," he said.

Despite the upbeat tone in financial markets, some analysts were sceptical that gains could be sustained.

"While equity volumes are picking up, they are still below average and so bargain-hunting may be helping as opposed to emergence of genuine support as markets adjust to a new normal and the prospect of the UK outside the EU," said Mike van Dulken, head of research at Accendo Markets.

In macroeconomic news from across the Atlantic, the third release of first-quarter US GDP growth came in at 1.1%, slightly higher than the 1.0% forecast and well ahead of the prior reading of 0.8%.

The S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index was somewhat disappointing, coming in at 186.63 for April against a forecast of 186.71, though it was also ahead of the previous reading of 184.58.

US consumer confidence was well ahead of expectations at 98.0 for June, against expectations of 93.5 and well in front of 92.4 last time.

In corporates, defence and aerospace group Rolls-Royce was on the front foot after saying the UK's decision to leave the EU would not have an immediate impact on day-to-day business, adding that it remains committed to the UK "where we are headquartered, directly employ over 23,000 talented and committed workers and where we carry out a significant majority of our research and development".

Housebuilder Redrow was sharply higher after saying it expects pre-tax profit for the year to be above the top end of analysts' estimates, which currently stand at £240m.

US Market Report

US open: Stocks gain after better-than-expected US GDP data

US stocks rose on Tuesday as data showed the nation's economy slowed less than originally estimated in the first quarter.
At 1459 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.20%, the S&P 500 edged up 1.28% and the Nasdaq gained 1.75%.

At the same time, oil prices advanced, with West Texas Intermediate up 2.9% to $47.74 a barrel and Brent crude up 2.7% at $48.49. Prices were supported by the possibility that oil and gas workers in Norway could go on strike from Saturday if they do not agree a wage deal.

In corporate news, ReachLocal shares surged 169.09% after Gannett announced that it was buying the digital marketing company for $4.60 a share.

Shares of Tesla Motors rose after the electric car maker said on Monday that it will form a two-person committee of independent board members to evaluate its buyout offer for SolarCity.

Carnival Corp. jumped after the cruise operator reported fiscal second-quarter profit and revenue that beat analysts' forecasts.

Regulus Therapeutics slumped after the biopharmaceutical company late Monday said the Food and Drug Administration has placed its investigational new drug for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection on clinical hold.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: Ocado, G4S, AB Foods

Numis reiterated a 'buy' rating and target of 400p on Ocado Group on Tuesday after the online grocer reported growth in first half revenue and earnings.
The company posted a 5.7% increase in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to £40.4m and revenue rose 14.1% to £584.2m.

The FTSE 250 firm saw profit before tax hit £8.5m, up from £7.2m, although cash and cash equivalents dropped to £52.7m from £70.4m by the end of the 24 week period.

Ocado chief executive Tim Steiner said "the market remains competitive with ongoing price deflation but our increasing scale and operational efficiencies meant that we still grew profits, albeit at a slower rate".

He said the company has been gaining share in the online grocery market, and expects this to continue.

Steiner added that testing of the company's new proprietary fulfilment and software solutions in its third facility in Andover was progressing well and they expected to move on from the test phase in the autumn post the quieter summer period.

"Regarding an international deal, there is no new news - Ocado states that it remains 'confident in its ability to sign multiple deals in the medium term', while it is in 'continued discussions with many potential international retailers to adopt the OSP'," Numis said.

"The lack of deal announcement, competition-led downgrades, and investor concerns around competition (albeit Amazon Fresh is having no impact on trading) look set to continue to weigh on the shares, but we retain our positive stance, continuing to believe that central fulfilment is the best model and that Ocado has the leading global solution."

Credit Suisse upgraded security services company G4S to 'outperform' from 'neutral' and lifted the price target to 210p from 200p, pointing to four main reasons for the move.

It said G4S would benefit greatly from sterling weakness, which the Swiss bank reckons will fall 10% across the board from its pre-referendum levels.

In addition, it argued that while the company has had more than its share of issues in recent years, the vast majority of its underlying business is stable and defensive.

CS said it expects asset sales over the next 18 months, which combined with improved working capital management, should lead to de-leveraging and free cash flow coverage of the dividend.

Finally it said that at 9.6x estimated 2017 price-to-earnings with a covered 5.4% dividend yield, the valuation is attractive.

"The key risks are that the asset sale process is delayed by market uncertainty resulting in a protracted period of high leverage and a 2016E dividend yield that is only just covered by FCF.

"We continue to see structural headwinds in the cash solutions business, which will only be partially offset by growth in cash outsourcing in the US. We capture this in our sum of the parts valuation."

Berenberg upgraded Primark owner Associated British Foods to 'buy' from 'hold' but cut the price target to 2,760p from 3,450p.

The bank noted shares have dropped more than 30% in the last three months and 20% in the last month alone, providing an entry point.

It argued that initially, fears were around trading momentum in the UK which was -1% at the first half due to the poor performance of the high street generally and unseasonable weather.

Berenberg said the company's third-quarter update on 7 July is likely to confirm such fears and guidance may come under pressure.

"While the current macroeconomic uncertainty revolving around Brexit (including wild FX movements with GBP -10% versus the US dollar in the last week affecting Primark's margins) does not help sentiment, we believe that with the shares now trading on 20x calendar 2017 P/E on our forecasts (27x average since 2014) this offers the best entry point in nearly three years."

The major U.S. index futures are pointing to a higher opening on Tuesday, with sentiment suggesting a return of risk appetite and interest in risky bets following their recent drubbing. Crude oil and risk currencies are higher. Also aiding sentiment would be an upward revision to the U.S. first quarter GDP. Equities could rally along with the risky bets. The markets could also stay focused on a consumer confidence reading due for the day.

U.S. stocks extended their steep losses on Monday, as traders did not get over the Brexit verdict of the Britons. The major averages opened lower and fell steadily till early afternoon trading. Thereafter, the indexes moved roughly sideways before ending sharply lower.

The Dow Industrials ended down 260.51 points or 1.50 percent at 17,140, its lowest level since March 10th, the S&P 500 Index closed 36.87 points or 1.81 percent lower at a 3-1/2 month low of 2,001 and the Nasdaq Composite ended at a 4-month low of 4,594, down 113.54 points or 2.41 percent.

Twenty-eight of the thirty Dow components ended lower for the session, with Visa (V), McDonald's (MCD), JP Morgan Chase (JPM), Intel (INTC), IBM (IBM), DuPont (DD), American Express (AXP), Boeing (BA) and Caterpillar (CAT) leading the slide.

European stocks are rebounding strongly after 2 days of steep losses following the Brexit vote. The major averages in the region are up about 2 percent or more.

In major corporate news, Legal & General appointed former second permanent secretary of HM Treasury John Kingman as its Chairman.

Rolls-Royce said in its pre-close statement that overall trading in the first five months of the year has been broadly in line with expectations. The company also maintained its full year guidance.

On the economic front, French statistical office INSEE reported that French consumer confidence eased in June. The consumer confidence index fell a point to 98 from a nearly 9-year high of 98. The drop was in line with expectations.

Data released by the German Federal Statistical Office showed that German import prices fell 5.5 percent year-over-year in May, slower than the 6.6 percent drop in April. Economists expected a steeper 5.8 percent drop. However, on a month-over-month basis, import prices rose 0.9 percent. Export prices fell 1.6 percent year-over-year but rose 0.2 percent month-over-month.

The major Asian markets closed mixed, as some of the markets recouped their early losses, triggered by the negative close on Wall Street overnight, and ended moderately higher. However, the Australian and Hong Kong markets retreated.

The Japanese market ended a volatile session marginally higher, even as the yen remained elevated. An assurance of policy support proved salubrious for the markets.

The Nikkei 225 Index opened notably lower and moved sideways around the lower levels. By late morning trading, the average cut its losses and rose above the unchanged line by early afternoon trading.

After moving back and forth across the unchanged line till the mid-session, the index moved decisively higher and remained above the unchanged line thereafter. The index ended up 13.93 points or 0.09 percent at 15,323.

Construction, food, telecom, utility and pharma stocks gained ground. On the other hand, export, financial, oil, material, retail, chemical and real estate stocks came under selling pressure.

Meanwhile, Australia's All Ordinaries Index languished below the unchanged line throughout the session before ending down 36.50 points or 0.70 percent at a more than 2-month low of 5,180.

The market witnessed broad based weakness, with consumer, energy, industrial, IT, material and telecom stocks all seeing notable weakness.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended at 20,173, down 54.84 points or 0.27 percent. On the other hand, China's Shanghai Composite ended a volatile session up 16.85 points or 0.58 percent at 2,913.

On the economic front, the South Korean government announced that it plans to inject additional stimulus, given the growth risks stemming from corporate restructuring and external uncertainties caused by the Brexit. The government said it intends to infuse 20 trillion won into the economy.
