London open: UK stocks advance strongly on "patient" Fed

UK stocks gained on Thursday morning following a stellar performance by Wall Street indices after the Federal Reserve said it would be "patient" to tighten monetary policy.

The FTSE 100 was up 0.6% at 6,376 early on, marking its third consecutive session in positive territory after the recent sell-off due to macro concerns, tumbling oil prices and financial turmoil in Russia.

US markets jumped on Wednesday with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average registering their best one-day performances of the year, up 1.7% and 2.1% respectively, after the Fed modified its forward guidance regarding interest rates.

The central bank didn't remove its "considerable time" language but added that it "can be patient" about tightening. Fed chair Janet Yellen said she doesn't see the Fed raising rates for "at least the next couple of meetings".

Analyst Jameel Ahmad from FXTM said that the Fed succeeded on Wednesday by not spooking investors further.

"The reiteration that the Federal Reserve will be intending to raise US interest rates in the coming year resulted in the USD rallying yesterday evening, while also providing investor sentiment with a vote of confidence following a hectic couple of days in the financial markets," he said.

Thursday will be another busy day for financial markets worldwide with a string of economic data to digest, such as German confidence figures, UK retail sales, US jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index.

LSE and AstraZeneca rise early on

Stock exchange operator LSE was in demand after saying it has made "good progress" over the course of 2014. Some £41bn of equity capital was raised on LSE's markets during the 11 months to 30 November, compared with £26.7bn the year before, while new issues jumped by 38%.

Also higher was British pharmaceutical giant Astrazeneca after it received marketing authorisation from the European Commission for its Lynpaza capsules.

Royal Mail was putting in decent gains after a report found that the company was £180m underpriced in its stock-market flotation last year.

Part-nationalised banking group Lloyds was lower amid speculation that the government will soon resume the sell-down of its 25% remaining stake in the lender. The sale of a further 10% could raise up to £3bn, reports suggest.

Mining stocks were providing a lift with Randgold, Fresnillo and Anglo American among the better performers.

Water provider United Utilities was automatically a heavy faller on the FTSE 100 after going ex-dividend, meaning that investors no longer quality for the latest dividend payout. FTSE 250 groups Berkeley, Greene King, Halfords, Marston's, Mitie and Polymetal also went ex-dividend.

Europe open: Stocks rise as German business confidence improves

European stocks advanced as a report showed German business confidence grew and the Swiss bank introduced a negative deposit rate. German business confidence rose in line with expectations. IFO's index increased to 105.5 in December from 104.7 a month earlier.

Elsewhere in the euro-area, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was unable to gain enough support for his nominee in a parliamentary vote for a new head of state. Greece is now closer to early elections, opening the door for the ascent of the anti-austerity party.

In the UK, a report at 09:30 London time is forecast to show retail sales rose 4.5% in November after a 4.6% increase in October.

Stateside, analysts predict initial jobless claims increased by 1,000 to 295,000 in the week to 13 December.

The Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged, as expected, but altered its tone on a potential increase by saying that it would be "patient" in deciding what to do next.

The central bank had previously said it would keep interest rates low for a "considerable time".

Company-wise Switzerland's Novartis AG and Roche Holding AG advanced after the nation's central bank introduced a negative deposit rate.

The Swiss National Bank said that it took the action "with the aim of taking the three-month Libor into negative territory, expanding its target range for to its usual width of one percentage point at -0.75% to 0.25%".

The euro fell 0.4% to $1.2337.

US Market Report

US close: Markets rise following Fed decision to maintain low rates

US stocks rose on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve decided to maintain low rates and consumer prices slid further than they have in six years.

The S&P 500 was up 2.04% at 2,012.89 in New York while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 1.69% to 17,356.87 and Nasdaq soared 2.11% to 4,644.31.

Consumer prices fell 0.3% month-on-month in November, the biggest drop since December 2008, on the back of a 6.6% tumble in energy prices.

Analysts had expected a 0.1% fall after a flat reading in October so the decline came as a surprise that pre-empted the Fed's decision.

Chief US economist at Capital Economics Paul Ashworth said: "The FOMC statement issued today had something for everyone but, on balance, it does not dissuade us that unexpectedly strong employment growth over the next few months could still prompt the Fed to hike rates next March, sooner than most others expect."

"Fed Chair Janet Yellen explicitly warned that, as things stand now, the FOMC was 'unlikely to begin the normalization process for at least the next couple of meetings'."

Barclays Research added: "We retain our baseline outlook for a policy rate hike in June, with risk to a later take-off given the downside risk to inflation."

The US dollar gained against the pound, the euro and the yen while the 10-year generic government yield went up by eight basis points to 2.14%.

Front month West Texas crude futures advanced by 0.036% to $55.95 per barrel while Brent crude increased by 1.137% to $60.70 per barrel.

Over on COMEX, gold futures dropped by 0.46% to $1,188.80.

Anadarko Petroleum went up 6.66% to 78.60, Fedex fell 3.72% to 167.78 and Cliffs Natural Resources plummeted 5.74% to 6.41.

3 Recovery Stocks for 2015

2014 has been a very turbulent year for several  major stocks.  Our report will give you insight into 3  major companies  that may have turned the corner.  Click Here.

Newspaper Round Up

Thursday newspaper round-up: Federal Reserve, Tesco, Lloyds...

US stock markets soared on Wednesday night after the Federal Reserve "gave its clearest signal yet that it intends to raise borrowing costs by - or even before - the middle of next year", writes The Times. Fed chair Janet Yellen said the bank was "unlikely" to hike interest rates "for at least the next couple of meetings".

The blackhole in Tesco's accounts may be larger than feared, according to The Telegraph, citing research from JPMorgan Cazenove. "The profit generated by Tesco's UK subsidiaries in the last financial year was £319m less than the profits reported by the company itself in the UK," the paper writes.

George Osborne hopes to raise £3bn by selling another chunk of the government's stake in Lloyds Banking Group, the Financial Times reported. This move will test investor appetite for shares in the part-nationalised bank, according to the paper, and the chancellor's announcement should see the taxpayers' holding in Lloyds gradually fall from 25% towards 20% in the run-up to the general election next May.

BT is preparing a finance package including a £2bn rights issue to help fund its planned EE takeover, according to The Telegraph. BT is also expected to raise around £3bn in the bond markets to fund its mobile ambitions, sources said, to help win the support of existing shareholders who may be resistant to any greater dilution, the paper said.

The Times said that the world's largest bond manager, Pimco, suffered an "exodus" from a key fund as Russia's financial crisis deepens. Pimco received over $1bn in redemption requests from investors in its $3.3bn emerging markets bond fund.

London open: UK stocks drop early on as investors await risk events

UK stocks dropped sharply on Wednesday morning as the sell-off resumed ahead of a busy session for global financial markets.

The FTSE 100 was down 0.8% at 6,284 early on.

The index had jumped 2.4% the previous session, snapping a six-day losing streak, as West Texas Intermediate crude futures rebounded after dipping below $55 a barrel, their lowest level since mid-2009.

Investors were likely to take a cautious approach on Wednesday ahead of a Federal Reserve policy decision, a Greek presidency vote and minutes of the latest Bank of England meeting.

Meanwhile, there will also be a raft of economic data on tap, including unemployment figures in the UK, a final reading of November inflation in the Eurozone, and inflation numbers in the States.

"Market volatility appears to be the order of the week, as a range of economic and political announcements mean that we have seen traders find it difficult to know whether we should be coming or going," said analyst Joshua Mahony from Alpari.

Dixons Carphone jumps

Electrical retailer Dixons Carphone was in demand after a strong first half in the UK helped group like-for-like revenues rise 5%. However, the company also warned that Dutch and German trading was still tough and said it was launching a review and restructuring.

Advertising and media giant WPP fell after unveiling a successor to Philip Lader who announced his plan to step down as long-running chairman earlier this year. The company said it has appointed IMI chairman Roberto Quarta as a non-executive director and chairman-designate.

Mining stocks were mixed early on with Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Glencore trading in the red, and Rio Tinto and Evraz making gains. Liberum upgraded its rating on the mining sector to 'hold' on Wednesday, with share prices having reached "our once-bearish price targets".

Glencore however was being weighed down by a ratings cut at Deutsche Bank to 'hold'.

Saga fell despite the over-50s services provider saying it expects to meet market expectations for the full year. The company, which provides travel, financial and healthcare services as well as a magazine for its 2.7m active customers, said trading since the half-year stage at 1 August has been "in line".

Europe open: Stocks drop ahead of BoE minutes, FOMC policy decision

European stocks slid as investors awaited the release of the Bank of England's (BoE) meeting minutes and the Federal Reserve's latest policy decision.

The BoE will at 09:30 London time release minutes of its 4 December meeting. The minutes may elaborate on the central bank's decision to maintain interest rates at 0.5% and asset purchases at £375bn.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is expected to maintain interest rates at 0.25% when it announces its policy at 19:00. The Fed has said it will keep rates low for a considerable time and analysts see the central bank holding off on any increase until mid- 2015.

The FOMC is also due to release its economic projections and Chair Janet Yellen will hold a press conference following the policy decision.

"Yellen may still be wringing her hands in concern over the long-term unemployed and low average wages but she seems as determined as her colleagues to start normalising monetary policy," said Teresa Towner, economist at Tavistock Communications.

"This means higher interest rates, albeit with very gentle increments, in 2015 followed by the running-down of the Fed's balance sheet."

UK labour market data is also due out, including figures on employment changes, jobless claims, weekly earnings and the unemployment rate.

In the euro-area, revised Eurozone inflation figures will be released but analysts expect no change to an initial estimate of a 0.3% rise in November. The European Central Bank (ECB), which is targeting inflation of just below 2%, is under mounting pressure to introduce full-blown quantitative easing to address price instability. Analysts see the ECB introducing QE in January 2015.

Also in mainland Europe, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras faces the first of three rounds of a presidential vote. The vote will determine whether Greece will enter snap national elections.

UCB, Acciona

UCB SA declined after the sale of its US generic-drug business to two private-equity firms for $1.53bn fell through.

Acciona SA declined after Expansion reported that the company's contract to build a tunnel in Melbourne could be suspended by the new state government.

Royal Philips dropped after agreeing to buy Volcano Corp. for $1bn.

The euro fell 0.42% to $1.2459.

US Market Report

US close: Markets decline amid disappointing housing starts and manufacturing data

US stocks declined amid news that housing starts fell and manufacturing growth reduced. The Dow Jones Industrials dropped 0.65% to 17,068.87 while the S&P 500 fell 0.84% to 1,972.74 and Nasdaq Composite ended lower by 1.24% to 4,548.

US housing starts month-on-month for November went down 1.6% after a revised 1.7% increase in October (versus the preliminary reading of -2.8%). The consensus forecast had been for a gain of 3.1%.

Barclays Research said: "Following the upward revision in housing starts for October, we are now tracking a stronger performance for residential investment."

The Federal Reserve has been gearing up to analyse data assessing the status of the economy ahead of the central bank's monetary policy decision on Wednesday.

IG analyst Chris Beauchamp said: "The Fed is likely to have taken note of the rout in oil and the growing problems in Russia and factored them into its outlook, as well as the impact on inflation of declining oil prices.

"This could lead to a more dovish statement than had been anticipated, which could provide the foundation on which investors can build a sustained end-of-year rally."

Meanwhile, HSBC's China manufacturing PMI declined from 50 in November to 49.5 in December, worse than the consensus forecast of 49.8.

Markit said: "Economic growth looks likely to come in a shade below the government's target of 7.5% in 2014, and the central bank is expecting it to wane further to 7.1% in 2015, citing the slowdown in real estate investment as a primary cause of the softening economic picture in China.?"

Oil prices continued to fall as West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 1.268% to $55.21, while Brent crude futures declined 2.19% to $59.75. This slide came as news hit that Iran will reduce the price of its oil shipments to Asia in January.

The dollar continued to weaken against the pound, euro and the yen.

Over on COMEX, gold futures receded by 0.9% to $1,196.8 per ounce.

In corporate news, CVS Health gained 2.72% to $92.31 after announcing a possible repurchase of $10bn in shares and increasing its dividend pay-out.

American depositary receipts in Sony saw its shares move higher amid reports of a $7bn offer from a group believed to be linked to Middle Eastern princes. However, the company closed on 0% change at 19.72.

Newspaper Round Up

Wednesday newspaper round-up: Russia, OPEC, Federal Reserve...

Russia has lost control of its economy and may be forced to impose Soviet-style exchange controls after "shock and awe" action by the central bank failed to stem the collapse of the rouble, according to The Telegraph. The paper quoted the central bank's vice-chairman Sergei Shvetsov as saying: "The situation is critical. What is happening is a nightmare that we could not even have imagined a year ago."

According to The Times, OPEC members could be forced into "drastic action" to preserve their financial stability after the recent collapse in the oil prices. The paper says that members will cut domestic spending, raid foreign capital reserves and devalue their currencies to avoid defaulting on debts.

The Federal Reserve faces a "delicate communications challenge" on Wednesday with how potential changes to its forward guidance will affect the struggling emerging markets, writes the Financial Times. The paper warned of a rout in emerging markets if the Fed sends a "strong signal on rate rises".

"Profits at Britain's leading banks would collapse by £91bn in the event of a new financial crisis," The Times said, citing the Bank of England's stress tests. The paper said that in that scenario lenders would be forced to cut shareholder payments and implement "swingeing cost cuts".

Swiss online travel firm Bravofly Rumbo Group has made a $120m (£76m) final bid for lastminute.com, writes The Telegraph.

John Lewis expects a "bumper finish" to shopping in December, according to The Guardian. The paper cited retail director Andrew Murphy as saying that Saturday would start a "pretty intense" burst of trade in its stores.

Apple has won a $1bn trial over allegations that it breached competition laws when blocking songs from rival music stores from playing on its iPods, The Telegraph reports.

Retail veteran Paula Schneider has taken over a chief executive of US fashion retailer American Apparel after the dismissal of controversial founder Dov Charney, according to The Guardian. The previous boss had faced allegations over sexual misconduct and was put under suspension in June.

London open: UK stocks extend slide as Chinese data disappoints

Yet more disappointing economic data from China pushed UK stocks lower for the seventh straight session on Tuesday, with markets extending losses despite plunging to an 18-month low the previous session.
Not even the news that the Bank of England (BoE) has given a clean bill of health to seven out of eight of the UK's top financial institutions could ease the slide, with sentiment still fragile after the recent sell-off.

London's FTSE 100 was trading 0.5% lower at 6,152 early deals.

Weighing on stocks was the news that Chinese factory output contracted more than expected this month. HSBC's China manufacturing purchasing managers' index declined from the break-even point of 50 in November to 49.5 in December, worse than the consensus forecast of 49.8.

The FTSE 100 sank 1.7% to finish at 6,182.72 on Monday - its worst close since June 2013 - as commodity stocks tanked on the falling oil price.

Both Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude have fallen by over 45% this year and were continuing to set fresh five-year lows. Brent in particular dropped below $60 a barrel on Tuesday, a level not seen since July 2009.

"Fear has spread through the markets causing another dismal day for equities, oil and a surprise interest rate hike," said Rocky Muddar, a trader at TradeNext.

The recent slide in oil further hammered Russia's rouble on Monday - down 50% against the dollar this year - prompting Moscow to take the drastic move and hike interest rates from 10.5% to 17%.

Banks in focus after BoE stress tests

Seven out of eight of the UK's largest banks and building societies have passed the BoE's latest round of stress tests, with the struggling Co-operative Bank being the only lender to have failed. BoE governor Mark Carney said that the results show that "the core of the banking system is significantly more resilient".

However, both RBS and Lloyds only narrowly managed to exceed the minimum capital buffer of 4.5% under the most severe economic scenario, achieving ratios of just 4.6% and 5.0% respectively. The sector as a whole was trading lower early on.

BT Group was subdued after announcing after the close that it intends to buy UK mobile network operator EE for £12.5bn in a cash-and-stock deal. The company will be giving EE's owners Deutsche Telekom and Orange stakes of 12% and 4%, respectively.

Mining giants Fresnillo, BHP Billiton and Anglo American were in the red after the worse-than-expected data from top metals user China, while oil producers BP, Tullow Oil and Shell were continuing to track the price of crude lower.

Europe open: Stocks decline as oil prices edge lower

European stocks slid despite Eurozone manufacturing growth rising more than expected, with sentiment dampened by oil prices hitting a new five-year low.
Markit's purchasing managers' index for euro-area manufacturing rose to 50.8 in December from 51.1 a month earlier, compared to forecasts for a reading of 50.5. A reading above 50 signals expansion.

A report at 09:30 London time may show UK inflation rose 1.2% year-on-year in November following a 1.3% increase a month earlier, according to consensus forecasts.

ZEW at 10:00 releases its German economic sentiment index which is expected to jump to 20 in December from 11.5.
The report comes amid speculation that the European Central Bank (ECB) will introduce full-on quantitative easing to address the stagnant economy and low inflation.

Meanwhile, falling oil prices continued to weigh on energy stocks including Petroleum Geo-Services ASA and Technip SA.

Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude were below the $60 per barrel mark in morning trade.

UK banks pass stress tests

Seven out of eight of the UK's largest banks and building societies have passed the Bank of England's (BoE) latest round of stress tests, with the struggling Co-operative Bank being the only lender to have failed. Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds, however, only narrowly scraped through the requirements.

Orange SA gained on news BT Group started exclusive talks to acquire EE, the British wireless venture Orange owns with Deutsche Telekom AG, for £12.5bn.

Repsol declined after saying it will buy Talisman Energy for $8 per common share in an all-cash deal.

US Market Report

US close: Markets in decline after brief boost for oil and gas sector amid Libyan closure

US stocks fell on Monday despite a positive start to the day as oil prices continue to slide amid higher than expected US industrial production numbers.
The Dow Jones Industrials lost 0.58% to end the session at 17,181 while the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.04% to finish at 4,605 and the S&P 500 dropped 0.62% to 1,990.

Front month West Texas crude futures slipped 4.539% to $55.30 per barrel on Monday while Brent crude futures declined 2.198% to $60.52 per barrel.

Brent crude futures briefly advanced early in the day after news hit that two Libyan oil terminals were closing due to fight break-outs.

Market analyst Alastair McCraig from IG said: "Regardless of how healthy the US economic data has been of late, Europe's collapse has dragged US equities with it."

"Even with the bounce seen in oil during Asian trading hours, pressure of oversupply looks likely to be in place for some time to come with UAE oil ministers expecting oil to get as low as $40 a barrel before OPEC changes its stance on production levels."

Capital Economics added: "The sharp drop in oil prices has played a major role in the recent poor performance of the MSCI Frontier Markets (FM) Index, in which a small number of oil exporting countries have large weightings."

"Indeed, the index is on course to underperform the MSCI Emerging Markets (EM) Index in Q4 for the first time since 2012. Given that we expect oil prices to remain low, we think the FM index is unlikely to outperform its EM counterpart significantly anytime soon.

"Nonetheless, we think the outlook for the equity markets in a number of smaller countries included in the FM index is relatively bright."

Over on COMEX, gold futures for delivery in February 2015 slipped by 2.40% to $1,193.20.

US 10-year Treasury yields were up by three basis points to 1.67% at the end of the day.

The dollar was up against the pound and the euro but fell against the yen.

Companies in the energy sector were mixed following today's news. Anadarko Petroleum dropped by 1.91% to 72.01 while Nabors Industries advanced by 2.8% to 10.28.

Newspaper Round Up

Tuesday newspaper round-up: BT/EE, Russian interest rates, Sydney siege..

BT has rejected a simpler takeover of O2 in favour of exclusive talks to buy Britain's biggest mobile operator, EE, for £12.5bn. However, according to The Telegraph, the combined entity will control "an unrivalled chunk of Britain's mobile airwaves" and the merger is likely to raise regulatory concerns.
The Financial Times reports that Russia's central bank has lifted its benchmark interest rate from 10.5% to 17%, just five days after the last rate hike. "The decision was driven by the need to limit the risks of devaluation and inflation, which have recently significantly increased," the central bank said in a statement.

The gunman who held a group of people hostage in a café in the middle of Sydney's financial district was killed along with two hostages as Australian officers stormed the building, according to The Times.

Chancellor George Osborne has said the plunge in the oil price is "overall a very good thing" for Britain and Western economies, The Telegraph reports. While he acknowledged that the UK has an important oil and gas industry, he said the recent collapse in prices would be a "net positive".

Big Six energy group EDF could be in line with a £3.3bn windfall over the new three years on the back of a new controversial government plan to pay power companies to guarantee their help in keeping the UK's lights on, The Guardian writes.

Guy Hands' private-equity firm Terra Firma is mulling a sale of its 68.6% stake in renewable energy group Infinis Energy, according to The Scotsman. The holding is worth £450m following the company's flotation last year.
