London close: UK stocks erase gains as US data misses forecasts

After a choppy session, the UK stock market finished more or less flat despite gains in the mining and telecom sectors, with a string of mostly disappointing economic data from the US weighing on sentiment. London's FTSE 100 finished the session just 1.97 points lower (-0.03%) at 6,729.17, having hit a high of 6,765.01 early on.

"A week that sees outperforming Eurozone data and poor US figures is always going to unsettle traders, with the market unable to reconcile the sudden downturn in numbers from the world's largest economy," said analyst Chris Beauchamp from IG.

"Today's pre-Thanksgiving barrage of US data kept markets on the hop but provided little good news," he said.

US jobless claims increased by 21,000 to 313,000 last week, well above the 288,000 expected by the market and the highest level registered in 11 weeks.

A wave of other US data also came in worse than forecasts, including personal spending figures, the Chicago manufacturing survey, the University of Michigan consumer-confidence index, and pending home sales. Data on durable-goods orders was the only indicator to beat expectations by unexpectedly rising 0.4% in October.

Closer to home, figures released on Wednesday morning confirmed that the British economy expanded as expected in the third quarter. UK gross domestic product growth was unrevised at 0.7%, a slowdown from the 0.9% expansion seen in the second quarter but "still very decent", according to economist Howard Archer from IHS Global Insight.

Markets across Europe finished mostly lower after European Central Bank vice president Vitor Constancio said the Bank may consider sovereign bond-buying early next year. His comments "suggested full sovereign quantitative easing would not come until next year", said analyst Jasper Lawler from CMC Markets UK.

Mining and telecom stocks on the rise, Thomas Cook plummets

MIning stocks were among the best performers on the FTSE 100, rebounding after recent declines with Antofagasta, Anglo American, Fresnillo and Randgold all registering decent gains.

BT Group was continuing to rise after saying that it was in talks with various companies about buying their UK mobile phone networks. It had previously announced it was in discussions with Telefonica, which owns O2, though Deutsche Telekom and Orange confirmed they are also in talks with BT about selling their EE joint venture.

Possible industry consolidation surrounding BT, which already runs broadband and TV operations, has also prompted speculation that other companies could look to combine operations. There were renewed rumours that Vodafone could approach Sky with a possible takeover offer or look to expand their partnership, sending shares in both firms higher.

Shares in Thomas Cook sank nearly 18% as it announced that chief executive Harriet Green has stepped down after just over two years in charge of the troubled FTSE 250 travel group. Green claimed her turnaround "was complete" as annual results showed improving profits from all divisions. Larger peer TUI Travel also finished lower.

Catering group Compass underwhelmed with its annual results, with the stock in the red after a 10.5% increase in the dividend and a 5.4% rise in full-year profits. Analysts at The Share Centre said the results were "solid" but the stock's valuation is "full".

Also falling was Britvic, who identified upcoming fierce competition between retailers in Britain, Ireland and France as a source of pressure on prices and sales growth.

Competition concerns were also weighing on Rightmove ahead of the launch of a new entrant to the property portal market early next year. Investec downgraded Rightmove from 'hold' to 'sell', saying that the launch of Agents' Mutual "could cause some trading turbulence, not helped by a tougher near-term housing market".

Meanwhile, Royal Mail was in the red after chief executive Moya Greene warned parliament that cherry-picking of more profitable urban delivery contracts seriously threatens the company's ability to provide countrywide letter delivery.

Europe close: Stocks mixed after UK GDP, US data

European stocks were mixed as analysts weighed UK economic growth figures and a batch of US data released before the markets close for Thanksgiving. UK, gross domestic product (GDP) rose an annualised 3% in the third quarter, as expected by analysts, the Office for National Statistics confirmed.

Capital Economics said the second estimate of GDP indicated that the end of the squeeze on real pay is helping consumers to drive the overall recovery.

"What's more, the prospects look bright for continued strong growth over the next few years," the analysts said.

In the US, a report showed durable goods orders rose 0.4% in October compared to a fall of 0.9% the previous month and analysts' expectations for a 0.6% drop.

US initial jobless claims increased 313,000 in the week to 22 November, more than the 288,000 predicted by the market.

US personal spending rose 0.2% in October following a flat reading the previous month. Analysts forecast a 0.3% gain.

The University of Michigan's index for consumer confidence in the US dropped to 88.8 in November from 89.4 the month before, surprising analysts who had expected a rie to 90.

ECB to consider buying sovereign debt next year

European Central Bank (ECB) vice president Victor Constancio said the monetary authority would consider purchasing sovereign debt next year.

Constancio said the ECB would look into buying government bonds proportional to the size of each Eurozone member's economy.

"We expect that the adopted measures will lead, within the time of the programme, the balance sheet to go back to the size it had in early 2012," Constancio said in a speech in London on Wednesday.

"If not, we will have to consider buying other assets, including sovereign bonds in the secondary market, the bulkier and more liquid market of securities available."

BT gains on EE takeover talks

BT Group jumped after Deutsche Telekom AG and Orange SA confirmed they are in talks to sell their UK wireless carrier EE to the British company.

Oil stocks slid as Saudi Arabia's oil minister said falling crude prices will stabilise and there's no need for producing nations to cut output.

Thomas Cook slumped after reporting annual profit that missed analyst estimates and announcing the resignation of its chief executive.

Amadeus IT Holding dropped as Deutsche Bank said it was selling 6.2m shares in the Spanish operator of travel booking systems.

The euro rose 0.23% to $1.2503.

US Market Report

US open: Markets largely unchanged after slightly disappointing economic data

US stocks were largely unchanged on Wednesday, as the number of jobless claims rose for the first time since September and orders for durable goods increased. Just before 10:00 in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.09% down, while the S&P 500 rose 0.02% and the Nasdaq fell 0.2%.

According to figures released by the US Department of Commerce, orders for durable goods increased by 0.4% month-on-month in October to $243.8bn, beating consensus estimate of a 0.6% drop.

September's figure was revised upward to show a drop of 0.9% month-on-month, instead of the 1.1% initially estimated, while durable goods orders have risen 7.5% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the core personal consumption index (CPI), the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, came in at 1.4% year-on-year, as expected, although the core measure ticked higher to 1.6%.

"Inflation has become a hot topic this year and is likely to continue to be in 2015, although the US seems to be suffering far less from low inflation than many of the other major nations," said Craig Erlam, analyst at Alpari UK.

"The latest reading is expected to pick up slightly from October's 1.5% reading, which would be in keeping with the CPI and PPI inflation readings, both of which showed an improvement when released last week."

Meanwhile, the latest jobless claims report jumped to an 11-week high, topping the 300,000 mark for the first time since early September.

The number of people who applied for new unemployment benefits jumped 21,000 to 313,000 in the week ended 22 November, exceeding the 288,000 estimate.

In corporate news, Hewlett-Packard rose almost 3% despite reporting fourth quarter sales that missed estimates, while Deere & Co slid after revealing its 2015 profit will be $1.9bn rather than $2.2bn as originally estimated.

Hertz Global Holdings fell slightly, after Icahn Associates increased its stake in the car rental company to about 11% from 8.7% at the end of September.

The dollar fell against the pound, the yen and the euro, while gold futures slid marginally to $1.197.10.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note dropped two basis points to 2.24%, while the yield on the 30-year note declined by the same margin to 2.94% and the yield on the five-year Treasuries fell one basis point to 1.56%.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: BT, Sage, Compass, Thomas Cook

UBS has speculated that if BT follows through with its current talks to buy O2 or EE it would become less aggressive in the forthcoming Premier League rights auction and produce a better outcome for Sky.
"We think concerns about Sky losing the EPL rights are weighing on investor sentiment but we are optimistic that the outcome could be less extreme than the market fears."

Numis Securities has raised its recommendation for accountancy software group Sage from 'hold' to 'add' ahead of the company's annual results next week.

Following the appointment of new Sage chief executive Stephen Kelly this month, Numis said that the results, due on 3 December, will be "a clear opportunity for management to re-invigorate the equity story".

Compass' full-year results were "solid", according to The Share Centre, but the broker kept a 'hold' rating on the catering stock.

"The company has a good pipeline of new contracts and expects to see progress in all its regions, however much of this is already factored into the share price and the valuation looks relatively full."

Stockbroker IG has raised concerns with Thomas Cook's ongoing turnaround plan following the news that chief executive Harriet Green has stepped down with immediate effect.

London open: UK stocks rise ahead of GDP data, but Thomas Cook sinks

UK stocks advanced on Wednesday as investors adopted an optimistic approach ahead of gross domestic product (GDP) figures in the UK.

London's FTSE 100 was up 0.4% at 6,755 in early deals, with mining stocks leading the charge after recent weakness, though results from blue chips Wolseley, Compass and United Utilities disappointed.

Meanwhile, Thomas Cook was a big mover on the FTSE 250 in morning trade, with shares losing a fifth of their value after the surprise departure of the travel group's boss.

UK GDP grew by 3% in the third quarter, the Office for National Statistics is expected to confirm on Wednesday morning. Quarter-on-quarter growth is also forecast to be unchanged from the initial 0.7% reading.

GDP figures from the States on Tuesday showed that growth was revised to 3.9% for the third quarter from the initial estimate of 3.5%, surprising analysts who had expected a downwards revision to 3.3%.

"Just like yesterday's US number, [the UK GDP data] is a second revision and thus there is a possibility that it simply confirms the 0.7% figure revealed last month," said analyst Joshua Mahony from Alpari. "However, taking a look at the spike we did see in the US number, there is a potential for significant revisions, causing market moves and thus for this reason, it is well worth watching out for this data point."

A report on US durable goods orders in October will also be in focus on Wednesday afternoon. Analysts predict a 0.6% fall after a 1.1% drop in September.

US jobless claims will also be on tap, one day earlier than usual due to the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. Claims are predicted to have fallen 3,000 to 288,000 in the week ended 22 November.

Thomas Cook CEO departs

Shares in Thomas Cook sank 20% early on as it announced that chief executive Harriet Green stepped down after just over two years in charge of the troubled travel group. Green, who is due to be replaced by chief operating officer Peter Fankhauser with immediate effect, claimed her turnaround "was complete" as annual results showed improving profits from all divisions.

Mining stocks were performing well after two days of declines as stocks pulled back after a China-inspired rally last week. Antofagasta, Randgold Resouces, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto were putting in decent gains.

Weak market conditions throughout Europe put gross margins under pressure in the first quarter at Wolseley, causing shares in the plumbing and heating products distributor to fall.

Catering group Compass underwhelmed with its annual results, as it lifted its annual dividend by 10% after an improvement in both sales and profits in the year to 30 September.

Also lower was United Utilites despite half-year results showing modest improvements in revenues and profits. The water company expressed confidence about the forthcoming new regulatory pricing structure after submitting a plan for lower prices.

Europe open: Stocks rally ahead of UK GDP, US durable goods orders

European stocks gained ahead of reports on UK economic growth and US durable goods orders. UK gross domestic product is forecast to have grown by an annualised 3% in the third quarter, the Office for National Statistics is expected to confirm.

Ahead of the release, a Bank of England Governor Mark Carney on Tuesday had said the prolonged slowdown in the Eurozone posed the biggest threat to the UK economy.

Joshua Mahoney, research analyst at Alpari UK, said: "The impact of the ongoing (and seemingly never-ending) downturn in the Eurozone is of course greatly impacting the UK who sees the single currency region as its main trade partner.

"Also, the impact of Russian sanctions will hit the UK more so than the UK simply due to the size of flows between the two countries. However, one thing that many seem to be ignoring the impact that falling energy prices will have upon both businesses and consumers alike."

In the US, a report on durable goods orders is forecast to show a 0.6% fall in October following a 1.1% drop in September.
Separately, initial jobless claims are forecast to rise 288,000 in the week to 22 November after 291,000 the previous week.

The University of Michigan's consumer confidence index is projected to increase to 90 from 89.4.

Elsewhere in the US will be the release of data on personal spending and new home sales.

Miners rally

A gauge of commodity producers were the biggest risers of the 19 industry groups on the Stoxx 600, led by Antofagasta and Randgold Resources.

Thomas Cook slumped after reporting annual profit that missed analyst estimates and announcing the resignation of its chief executive.

Amadeus IT Holding dropped as Deutsche Bank said it was selling 6.2m shares in the Spanish operator of travel booking systems.

The euro rose 0.01% to $1.2475.

US Market Report

US close: Oil slides to four-year low, mixed data weighs

The main US equity gauges ended the session on a mixed footing as a drop in oil futures pulled the rug out from under the sector's quoted companies.

Traders continued to be on edge given the possibility that OPEC, the cartel of oil producing nations, might not decide on a reduction of its production levels when it meets on 27 November. That could see further sharp losses ensue in world oil prices.

Analysts such as those at Morgan Stanley do however believe that some sort of action, even if only to slow the drop in prices, is the most likely outcome of the summit. As always, the key player, Saudi Arabia, is playing its cards close to its chest.

The run-up to Thanksgiving often seems subdued trading conditions, given the absence of many market operators.

Nonetheless, analysts seemed to strike a somewhat sombre note following the release of several weaker than expected reports on the state of the economy.

Mixed economic data

According to figures released by the Commerce Department gross domestic product (GDP) rose by an annualised 3.9% in the three months to the end of September, revised up from the initial estimate of 3.5%. GDP has now grown by an average of 4.2% in the last six months, the strongest two-quarter stretch since the middle of 2003.

However, the conference board's consumer confidence index for November surprised to the downside, printing at 88.7 for November, after the prior month's 94.1 (consensus: 97).

The FHFA's house price index was flat on the month to September (consensus: 0.3%).

"Business expectations about the year ahead are running at the lowest seen since 2009. Hiring and investment intentions have also slipped to post-recession lows as US companies worry in particular about the global economic climate," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.

"With central banks in the Eurozone and Japan taking further action to boost economic growth, worries about the global economic outlook are perhaps overly gloomy."

Oil stocks drag

From a sector standpoint oil related stocks were easily the underdog in Tuesday's session, surrendering 2.58% after a group of key oil producing countries and Russia's state-owned oil firm failed to reach an agreement ahead of Thursday's OPEC summit in Vienna.

Much commented, at one point in the session Apple's market capitalisation surpassed the $700bn mark.

Tiffany & Co rose despite missing third-quarter profit estimates.

Shares in Signet Jewelers gained after the company reported third-quarter earnings that beat analysts' estimates, as did those of Nuance Communications after the maker of speech-recognition software reported fourth-quarter earnings that charged ahead of market forecasts.

Crude nears four-year lows

The dollar fell against the pound, the euro and the yen, while gold futures advanced slightly to $1.196.90.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note fell five basis points to 2.26%, while the yield on the 30-year note was off by six basis points to 2.96% and the yield on the five-year Treasuries declined three basis points to 1.57%.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures plumbed near four-year lows, dropping 2.6% to trade at $73.82 by the 'closing bell'.

Newspaper Round Up

Wednesday newspaper round-up: BG, Apple, Opec, Microsoft

The Guardian reports that The Institute of Directors has attacked the £25m pay deal promised to the new boss of oil and gas group BG, claiming it damaged the reputation of corporate Britain, and asked the company's shareholders to block the proposed package.

On Tuesday, Apple set a record by becoming the first business in the world to be valued at $700bn (£446bn), reports the Telegraph.

The technology giant, already the world's most valuable business, saw its shares rise nearly 1% in early trading on Tuesday, giving it a market capitalisation of $701.7bn.

Oil prices continued to slump after negotiations between some members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) were fruitless, reports the Times.

Ahead of Wednesday's meeting in Vienna, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Mexico held talks with Russia, but no progress was made. On Tuesday, Brent crude fell to $78.41 a barrel, close to a four-year low.

Microsoft has been fined $140m in back taxes and interest by the Chinese government, the Financial Times reports.

Chinese news agency Xinhua said that while the firm's China-based business were officially in the red, the profits were being booked in offshore tax havens and Microsoft has since admitted to tax evasion.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Justice is investigating allegations that an employee of HSBC leaked confidential client information to a so-called 'hedge-fund'.

London close: UK stocks finish flat as retailers fall, data comes in mixed

London's FTSE 100 ended Tuesday's session more or less where it started with stocks in the retail sector limiting gains while investors digested a string of important economic data.
A disappointing third-quarter update from Kingfisher saw shares in the DIY retailer slump, while the supermarket sector was under pressure after Tesco shareholders launched legal action following a recent accounting scandal.

Oil and mining stocks were also providing a drag on the FTSE 100, with the blue-chip index finishing just 0.02% higher at 6,731.

Earlier gains across Europe - sparked by ongoing speculation about monetary easing by the European Central Bank - were erased by the close of trade after some mixed economic indicators from the States.

Annualised US gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the third quarter was revised higher to 3.9%, up from the initial estimate of 3.5%, surprising analysts who had expected a downwards revision to 3.3%.

The upside surprise is "another reason to expect the Fed to begin normalising interest rates sooner than expected next year", according to analysts at Capital Economics who predict the Federal Reserve will start hiking rates in March 2015.

However, sentiment was dampened by the data which showed that US consumer confidence unexpectedly tumbled in November, while annual US house-price inflation eased to its slowest pace in two years in September.

Earlier in the session, figures showed that Germany avoided recession with the economy expanding by 0.1% in the third quarter, while UK mortgage approvals dropped to a 17-month low in October.

Retailers under pressure

Shares in Kingfisher declined after the B&Q and Screwfix owner saw like-for-like sales fall in the third quarter as decent growth in the UK and Ireland was offset by falling sales in its largest market, France.

Tesco was feeling the heat from its indignant shareholders in response to a recent accounting scandal that left a £263m black hole in its accounts. A law firm claimed that shareholders are entitled to compensation for losses caused by the overstating of earnings. Grocery rivals J Sainsbury and Wm Morrison were also under the weather.

Oil producers such as BP, Tullow Oil and Shell were lower as crude prices declined for the second straight day ahead of Thursday's OPEC meeting. Prices recently hit a four-year low on concerns that OPEC won't issue a cut in production.

Mining stocks were also mostly weaker as shares continued to retreat after a China-inspired rally last week as the country's central bank unexpectedly lowered interest rates. Anglo American and BHP Billiton both fell.

Meanwhile, media stocks were putting in a decent performance with Sky, Reed Elsevier and ITV rising strongly. ITV was helped by comments from Goldman Sachs which reiterated its 'buy' rating on the stock due to an "attractive" valuation.

BT was continuing to rise on speculation that it could buy UK mobile operator O2 from Telefonica. Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reported BT could offer at least €6bn (£4.76bn) on top of a 20% stake in its share capital for the company it originally spun off in 2001.

Europe close: Stocks rise after US and German GDP

European stocks gained as investors weighed economic growth data in German and the US.
The Federal Statistics office in its final estimate said German gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.1% in the third quarter. The economy grew 0.3% in annualised terms, after a 0.1% quarterly contraction in the second quarter.

"Overall, the composition lends support to our expectations that German GDP will continue to grow moderately at around 0.1% quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter," said Berenberg.

In the US, the Commerce Department said GDP rose to an annualised growth of 3.9%, compared to a previous estimate of 3.5%. Analysts had GDP would be revised to a 3.3% gain.

US personal consumption was revised to 2.2% in the third quarter from 1.8%, compared to forecasts for a 1.9% gain.

Separately, the Conference Board's index for US consumer confidence fell to 88.7 in November from 94.5 a month earlier, missing estimates for a reading of 96.

Meanwhile, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said that the global economy will gradually improve over the next two years. However, OECD estimated that Japan will grow less than previously expected while Eurozone struggles with stagnation and an increased deflation risk.

Carney says Eurozone poses threat to UK

Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney said the prolonged slowdown in Eurozone poses the biggest threat to the UK economy.

However, on the same day BoE policymaker Kristen Forbes said that the outlook for the global economy may not be as weak as fellow Monetary Policy Committee members predict, weighing less on the UK than expected.

In other UK news, a report from the British Bankers' Association showed British banks approved 37,076 mortgages for house purchase in October, the lowest number since May last year.

Mortgage approvals for house purchase fell from 39,127 in September, 16% down from the same time a year ago.

Santander higher after CEO appointment

Santander's shares climbed after saying its chief executive Javier Marin will be replaced by chief financial officer Jose Antonio Alvarez.

IG Group advanced as the UK spread betting firm said sales for the quarter ending 1 December will rise to a record.

ING Groep NV rallied after the Dutch lender said it plans to cut 1,700 jobs in the next three years.

Kingfisher slumped after the home improvement retailer reported a 9.3% fall in France sales in the 13 weeks to 1 November.

The euro rose 0.19% to $1.2466.

US Market Report

US open: Markets edge forward amid better-than-expected GDP growth

US stocks moved slightly forward on Tuesday, as the country's economy grew more than forecast in the third quarter.
Just before 10:00 in New York the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.01% down, while the S&P 500 rose 0.20% and the Nasdaq was 0.40% up.

Meanwhile, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said that the global economy will gradually improve over the next two years. However, the OECD estimated that Japan will grow less than previously expected, while the Eurozone will struggle with stagnation and an increased deflation risk.

"Although surveys suggest consumer confidence has risen to its highest since 2007, the mood in the corporate sector has started to sour," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.

"Business expectations about the year ahead are running at the lowest seen since 2009. Hiring and investment intentions have also slipped to post-recession lows as US companies worry in particular about the global economic climate.

"With central banks in the Eurozone and Japan taking further action to boost economic growth, worries about the global economic outlook are perhaps overly gloomy. "

Tiffany & Co declined after missing third-quarter profit estimates, while Post Holdings fell as the company forecast a $15m-$20m decline in first-quarter RTE cereal sales from a year earlier.

Signet Jewelers rose after reporting third-quarter earnings that beat analysts' estimates, while Nuance Communications jumped as the maker of speech-recognition software reported fourth-quarter earnings that charged ahead of market forecasts.

The dollar fell against the pound, the euro and the yen, while gold futures advanced slightly to $1.196.90.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note fell one basis point to 2.30%, while the yield 30-year note fell two basis points to 3.00% and the yield on the five-year Treasuries declined one basis point to 1.59%.
