London close: FTSE despite positive manufacturing, BoE in focus for possible rate hike

London stocks closed marginally lower on Wednesday even as the pound fell despite better-than-expected manufacturing data, which underpinned expectations of a rate hike tomorrow by the Bank of England.

The top flight index slipped 0.07% or 5.12 points to 7,487.96, while the pound was down 0.13% versus the dollar to 1.3264, having hit 1.3321 after the manufacturing data came out, and 0.05% firmer against the euro at 1.1411, albeit down from an intraday high of 1.1450.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said: "October's PMI came in at 56.3 against the 55.8 forecast and the (revised) 56.0 seen in September. And though this didn't cause anything resembling a sterling surge, it did allow the currency to maintain its early gains."

"It could be argued that this manufacturing beat gives the Bank of England hawks a bit more ammo heading into Thursday's rate vote," he added.

With a PMI above 50 signalling growth, the manufacturing sector has been on the rise for 15 months in a row, according to Markit's figures.

Economists said the survey will reassure the Bank of England that the economy is coping relatively well with the prospect of imminently higher interest rates.

In a note to clients earlier, Craig Erlam at Oanda chipped in, "A growing number of policy makers now appear to be of the belief that last year's rate cut is no longer necessary and a return to the previous lower bound is warranted," adding, "Markets are heavily pricing in a rate hike tomorrow which may limit any upside in the pound in relation to this, with the accompanying commentary probably more important. With a split among policy makers being clear from recent commentary, a failure to hike tomorrow could trigger a sharp decline in the pound."

Total new order intakes rose at a substantial rate during October, according to the survey compiler, bouncing back from a weak prior month to put the manufacturing sector on a solid footing for at the start of the fourth quarter of the year.

In corporate news, Paddy Power Betfair rallied after it said trading was good in the third quarter, prompting the bookmaker to make a small upgrade to its annual profit guidance.

AstraZeneca was in the black after mixed news. The pharmaceuticals giant said the US Food and Drug Administration has granted accelerated approval to Calquence (acalabrutinib) - a kinase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of adult patients with mantle cell lymphoma who have received at least one prior therapy. However, the company also announced disappointing results for an asthma therapy it has been developing.

Irish packaging company Smurfit Kappa advanced as it posted a rise in third-quarter revenue and announced acquisitions in Greece and Russia to expand the group's footprint.

Indivior surged after the company's monthly treatment of opioid use disorder was recommended for approval by an advisory body to the US drug regulator.

Going the other way, Next was under the cosh after saying it continued to sustain declines in full price sales from its shops in the third quarter but thanks to strong online and catalogue growth the clothing retailer marched on towards its full year targets. Marks & Spencer and Primark owner Associated British Foods were also under pressure.

Standard Chartered was in the red after its posted adjusted pre-tax profit of $814m for the third quarter and operating income of $3.59bn, versus estimates of $3.64bn.

Retirement savings specialist Just Group ticked higher despite posting a drop in total sales for the third quarter.

In broker note action, Pagegroup was boosted by an upgrade to 'buy' at Panmure Gordon, while G4S gained as Jefferies bumped it up to 'buy' and InterContinental Hotels was lifted by an upgrade to 'outperform' at Credit Suisse.

Debenhams was hit by a downgrade to 'sell' at Liberum.

US Market Report

US open: Buying momentum spills over into November

Wall Street has begun the new month with fresh gains ahead of the US central bank's policy announcement later in the day and various readings on the economy that some analysts said pointed to GDP growth in the vicinity of 3% in the final stretch of 2017.

At 1507 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 0.38% or 89.55 points at 23.465.38, alonsgide a 0.32% gain for the S&P 500 to 2,583.49 and an advance of 0.10% for the Nasdaq Composite to 6,733.58.

From a sector standpoint, the biggest gains were to be seen in Gambling (3.24%), Industrial metals (2.84%) and Distillers (2.74%).

In parallel, the yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note was off by two basis points to 2.36%.

The Fed interest rate decision was due at 1800 GMT, with no change expected. Market participants would also be turning their attention to President Trump's announcement, due Thursday, about who will replace Janet Yellen as the Fed Chair following reports that he is leaning towards Fed Governor Jerome Powell.

Konstantinos Anthis at ADS Securities said: "Given that there will be no changes in policy today the focus will be on the forward guidance the Fed decides to provide investors with and with no press conference scheduled for November's meeting market participants will be eager to read what the accompanying statement has to offer.

"The dollar has been on the rise recently and even though it pulled back at the start of the week the bias remains to the upside. Should the Fed's statement point towards further tightening this year and more hikes in 2018 the dollar should extend its gains albeit at a moderate pace as traders will want to wait until Friday's non-farm payrolls report to avoid any unpleasant surprises."

Investors were also be keeping an eye out for Trump's tax reform bill, which was meant to be released on Wednesday but has been pushed back a day to resolve some issues.

On the economic front, the widely-followed ISM manufacturing sector purchasing managers' index slipped a tad more than expected in October, printing at 58.7, which was down from 60.8 for the previous month (consensus: 59.1).

Such a reading, Mickey Levy and Roiana Reid at Berenberg Capital Markets said, was consistent with 3% GDP growth in the last quarter of the year. Despite the slight miss, it was also at the 82bn percentile of all historical readings.

Also to take note of, according to ADP/Moody's private sector payrolls rose by 235,000 in October (consensus: 190,000) helped in part by reconstruction efforts in the wake of the recent hurricanes on the Gulf Coast.

In corporate news, auto manufacturers were in focus, with GM having posted a 2% drop in sales to 252,813 units alongside 13% fewer vehicles sold by Fiat, although Ford reported a 6.4% increase.

Sector wide estimates for the month of October were due out later on Wednesday.

Shares of US Steel were also in the spotlight, jumping in the wake of better-than-expected quarterly numbers out overnight which helped to quell concerns around the company on the back of rival AK Steel's latest set of figures published the day before. In particular, market participants took note of stronger than forecast guidance.

Meanwhile, in the background, investors were eyeing the first move by the nation's retailers to position ahead of Black Friday, as the day after the Thanksgiving holiday - which 'officially' marks the start of the holiday shopping season - is called with Amazon.com and E-Bay unveiling their plans for this critical quarter.

Stock of Clorox was also in the green after its fiscal first-quarter earnings beat analysts' estimates, while Estee Lauder shares were rocketing as the cosmetics maker's first-quarter financials surpassed analysts' forecasts.

Allergan was holding higher too after the biotech concern posted third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $4.15 versus consensus expectations of $4.04, while Molson Coors was in focus as the brewer reported third-quarter adjusted EPS in line with expectations and said full-year targets are unchanged.

Still to come, earnings were due from Facebook and Tesla after the close, along with Kraft, Heinz and Qualcomm.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: Debenhams, G4S, IHG

Debenhams was under the cosh on Wednesday as Liberum downgraded its stance on the department store chain to 'sell' from 'hold' and cut the price target to 40p from 58p as it revisited the investment case following the group's prelims.

"Looking past the low current rating (CY18E PER 8.4x), we focus on the fundamentals, which do not enthuse us," it said. The brokerage argued that ongoing structural challenges, a soft consumer environment, rising costs and increasing capex demands make for a difficult outlook.

Liberum acknowledged management's ambition and the progress made so far with the 'Debenhams Redesigned' strategy. However, it highlighted long-term structural challenges which it reckons will demand increasing investment just to maintain - at best - market position.

"Mid-market department stores are being squeezed by more premium players, specialists and online. We acknowledge the progress under the new CEO, but turning 13m sq. ft. into 'destination' space is tough. Material closures/right-sizing will take time."

Security services company G4S was on the front foot on Wednesday as Jefferies upgraded the stock to 'buy' from 'hold' and lifted the price target to 330p from 270p.

It noted that the shares have underperformed on the back of disappointing second-quarter organic revenue growth, but said momentum should recover in the first half of 2018, helped by improving emerging markets and US wage inflation.

"A new Cash360 contract should contribute 1% to organic revenue growth from Q4; emerging markets momentum should improve over the next 12 months; US wage rate inflation has accelerated sharply; and the bid pipeline continues to edge higher," it said.

Jefferies pointed out that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, security wage inflation has accelerated sharply to 10-15%.

The major U.S. index futures are pointing to a higher opening on Wednesday, with stocks poised to add to the modest gains posted in the previous session.

Early buying interest may be generated in reaction to strength in the overseas markets, which benefited from an increase in oil and metal prices.

The upward momentum also comes following the release of a report from payroll processor ADP showing stronger than expected private sector job growth in the month of October.

Nonetheless, trading activity may be somewhat subdued ahead of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement this afternoon.

The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, but traders will look to the accompanying statement for clues about the possibility of a rate hike in December.

Following the modest pullback seen to start the week, stocks moved back to the upside during trading on Tuesday. While buying interest was somewhat subdued, the tech-heavy Nasdaq reached a new record closing high.

The major averages all closed in positive territory, although the Nasdaq outperformed its counterparts. The Nasdaq climbed 28.71 points or 0.4 percent to 6,727.67, while the Dow inched up 28.50 points or 0.1 percent to 23,377.24 and the S&P 500 crept up 2.43 points or 0.1 percent to 2,575.26.

The modest strength on Wall Street partly reflected a positive reaction to the latest batch of earnings news, with Kellogg (K) and Mondelez (MDLZ) posting notable gains after reporting better than expected third quarter results.

Shares of Sony (SNE) also moved sharply higher after the consumer electronics giant reported strong second quarter profit growth and raised its full-year guidance.

On the other hand, Under Armour (UAA) posted a steep loss after the athletic apparel maker reported better than expected third quarter earnings but slashed its full-year outlook.

Overall trading activity was relatively light, however, with traders looking ahead to key economic data and earnings news in the coming days.

The closely watched monthly jobs report due to be released on Friday is likely to be in focus, with employment expected to jump by 300,000 jobs in October.

Reports on manufacturing and service sector activity, construction spending, and labor productivity and costs may also attract attention.

On the earnings front, Apple (AAPL), Facebook (FB), DowDuPont (DWDP), Yum! Brands (YUM), and Starbucks (SBUX) are among the companies due to report their quarterly results later this week.

Traders largely shrugged off a report from the Conference Board showing a substantial improvement in consumer confidence in the month of October.

The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index jumped to 125.9 in October from an upwardly revised 120.6 in September. Economists had expected the index to inch up to 121.0 from the 119.8 originally reported for the previous month.

With the much bigger than expected increase, the consumer confidence index reached its highest level since hitting 128.6 in December of 2000.

Computer hardware stocks showed a significant move to the upside over the course of the trading day, driving the NYSE Arca Computer Hardware Index up by 2.2 percent. The index bounced further off the two-month closing lower set last Friday.

Supercomputer maker Cray (CRAY) posted a standout gain after reporting third quarter results that beat analyst estimates on both the top and bottom lines.

Notable strength also emerged among telecom stocks, with the NYSE Arca North American Telecom Index climbing by 1.3 percent. The gain by the index came after it ended the previous session at its lowest closing level in over eleven months.

On the other hand, gold stocks came under pressure on the day, dragging the NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index down by 1.6 percent. The weakness in the sector came amid a decrease by the price of gold.

After reporting a notable slowdown in U.S. private sector job growth in the previous month, payroll processor ADP released a report showing a bigger than expected increase in private sector employment in the month of October.

ADP said private sector employment climbed by 235,000 jobs in October after rising by a downwardly revised 110,000 jobs in September.

Economists had expected an increase of about 200,000 jobs compared to the addition of 135,000 jobs originally reported for the previous month.

The bigger than expected increase came after private sector employment grew at its slowest rate in nearly a year in September.

At 10 am ET, the Institute for Supply Management is scheduled to release its report on manufacturing activity in the month of October.

The ISM's manufacturing index is expected to slip to 59.5 in October after climbing to a thirteen-year high of 60.8 in September, although a reading above 50 would still indicate growth.

The Commerce Department is also due to release its report on construction spending in the month of September at 10 am ET. Construction spending is expected to come in unchanged.

At 10:30 am ET, the Energy Information Administration is scheduled to release its report on oil inventories in the week ended October 27th.

Crude oil inventories are expected to drop by 2.6 million barrels after edging up by 0.9 million barrels in the previous week.

Following a two-day meeting, the Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce is latest monetary policy decision at 2 pm ET.

London open: Stocks edge higher ahead of manufacturing data; Next bucks trend

London stocks edged higher in early trade on Wednesday as investors sifted through corporate news ahead of some key manufacturing data, although retailer Next bucked the trend after disappointing third-quarter results.

At 0830 BST, the FTSE 100 was up 0.4% to 7,523.91, while the pound was up 0.2% versus the euro at 1.1422 and 0.1% firmer against the dollar at 1.3301.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said: "Now the FTSE and the pound just need to withstand the morning's UK manufacturing PMI. After smashing forecasts in July and August, September saw the PMI post fairly sizeable miss; it's expected to have continued to cool in October, with analysts forecasting a slight dip from 55.9 to 55.8 month-on-month (though estimates haven't been anywhere near accurate for a while)."

Markit's manufacturing PMI is at 0930 GMT, while the Federal Reserve's latest policy announcement is at 1800 GMT, although no change to rates is expected.

As far as the UK is concerned, the Bank of England will make its policy announcement on Thursday amid expectations of the first rate hike since 2007.

A survey released earlier by Nationwide earlier revealed that UK house price growth ticked up a little to a three month high in October. House prices increased 2.5% on the year versus 2.3% in September, beating analysts' expectations for a slowdown to 2.2%. On the month, prices were up 0.2%, in line with expectations but down from 0.4%.

In corporate news, Next was under the cosh after saying it continued to sustain declines in full price sales from its shops in the third quarter but thanks to strong online and catalogue growth the clothing retailer marched on towards its full year targets. Marks & Spencer and Primark owner Associated British Foods were also under pressure.

Standard Chartered was also in the red after it posted adjusted pre-tax profit of $814m for the third quarter and operating income of $3.59bn, versus estimates of $3.64bn, while Just Group ticked lower as it posted a drop in total sales for the third quarter.

On the upside, Paddy Power Betfair rallied after it said trading was good in the third quarter, prompting the bookmaker to make a small upgrade to its annual profit guidance.

Old Mutual edged higher after announcing that the strategic minority shareholding to be retained in South African banking firm Nedbank Group, to underpin the ongoing commercial relationship between the companies, has been agreed at 19.9%.

Irish packaging company Smurfit Kappa advanced as it posted a rise in third-quarter revenue and announced acquisitions in Greece and Russia to expand the group's footprint.

Indivior surged after the company's long-lasting treatment of opioid use disorder was recommended for approval by the US drug regulator's advisory body.

Halma gained ground as it completed the acquisition of Mini-Cam from Lloyds Development Capital and a group of private shareholders for an initial cash consideration of £62m.

CLS Holdings advanced after completing the disposal of Centenary Court in Bradford to a private investor for £14.35m.

In broker note action, Pagegroup was boosted by an upgrade to 'buy' at Panmure Gordon, while G4S gained as Jefferies bumped it up to 'buy' and InterContinental Hotels was lifted by an upgrade to 'outperform' at Credit Suisse.

On the downside, Debenhams was hit by a downgrade to 'sell' at Liberum.

US Market Report

US open: Wall Street set to finish October on a positive note

Wall Street was trading slightly higher on the last day of October with investors digesting another slew of corporate results as the US central bank's two-day policy meeting got underway.

Ahead of the Fed's rate announcement and alongside multiple strong readings on the economy, at 1515 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead by 0.12% or 27.50 points at 23,375.93, while the S&P 500 was ahead by 0.14% or 3.70 points to 2,576.52 with the Nasdaq Composite 0.40% or 26.47 points firmer at 6,725.64.

From a sector standpoint, the strongest performance was being seen in the following industry groups: Paper (2.03%), Food products (1.90%) and Forestry & Paper (1.68%).

On the economic front, the Chicago NAPM's regional manufacturing purchasing managers' index shot higher in October to reach a reading of 66.2 (consensus: 60.0).

Those figures came alongside the results of the Conference Board's latest consumer confidence survey which picked up to a level of 125.9 (consensus: 121.0) - its best print since December 2000.

In corporate news, shares of healthcare insurer Aetna were slipping despite reporting third-quarter earnings that beat expectations and lifting its 2017 guidance, while snack maker Mondelez was on the front foot after it reported better-than-expected third-quarter profit late on Monday.

IBM was also in the spotlight after the technology stalwart unveiled a $3.0bn share buyback programme.

Chip-maker Micron Technology was one of the most wanted stocks, even on the back of already hefty gains year-to-date which had seen its shares almost double in value.

Earlier on Tuesday, the company announced deals with two Chinese outfits, including Shenzhen Security and Protection Industry Association, to accelerate deployment of new products in Asia.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals was on the up too after the company said it is on track to pay down more than $5bn in debt ahead of its previous 2018 goal.

Going the other way, Under Armour was getting riddled by sell orders on the heels of lower-than-expected third-quarter revenue due to weaker North American demand and as the apparel retailer cut its full-year outlook.

General Electric was also among the most traded issues on the NYSE, amid 'market chatter' referencing the conglomerate's expected 13 November meeting with investors.

Pfizer stock was down even after its third-quarter profit figures failed to impress and the company raised its 2017 earnings outlook.

Qualcomm shares were unloved following reports that Apple could ditch the company's components in next year's iPhones, while Archer Daniels was in focus after the agricultural commodities processor posted third-quarter earnings per share of 34 cents versus 58 cents a year ago.

Hormel Foods found a bid after agreeing to buy salami maker Columbus Manufacturing for around $850m.

Newspaper Round Up

Wednesday newspaper round-up: UK property market, North-South divide, Bitcoin

The UK’s property market will take this week’s expected rise in interest rates in its stride, according to ratings agency Moody’s, but it warned that the outlook for the buy-to-let market has worsened significantly. The agency, which along with Standard & Poor’s was widely condemned for awarding triple-A ratings to sub-prime mortgage books before the 2008 financial crisis, said the British property market is more resilient than is widely believed. – Guardian

Britain's north-south divide should be tackled by a government pledge in its new industrial strategy to provide every citizen with decent transport, schools, hospitals and digital access, an expert body says. The independent industrial strategy commission on Wednesday urged ministers to tackle Britain's regional imbalances by committing to universal basic infrastructure " a guaranteed standard for the whole of the UK. " Guardian

Fast-growing fintech company MarketInvoice is launching a business lending service, after advancing over £1.6bn to UK firms through invoice finance over the past six years. Anil Stocker, chief executive and co-founder of MarketInvoice, told The Daily Telegraph that the firm wanted to lend over £100m to companies within two years. - Telegraph

Britain's economy will grow only slowly for the foreseeable future as weak productivity dents the UK's prospects, a top economic think-tank has warned. Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, has only limited wiggle room in his November Budget as a result, because sluggish growth will be bad for tax revenues in the years to come. " Telegraph

Manufacturers are demanding tougher controls over foreign takeovers after the acquisition of one of Britain's most promising technology companies. The EEF, which represents 20,000 companies, said that an independent panel should be established to consider the wider impact of takeovers, such as changes to supply chains and the loss of technological prowess, when deciding the potential benefits. " The Times

Bitcoin surged past $6,400 for the first time yesterday as an American derivatives exchange announced plans to sell futures contracts for the digital currency. The plans, announced by CME Group, would allow investors to trade in bitcoin in the same way that they trade in gold, oil and other assets that use futures. " The Times
