London open: Stocks rise but Provident Financial tanks on profit warning

London stocks rose in early trade as well-received results from the likes of Persimmon and BHP Billiton helped to offset another profit warning from sub-prime lender Provident Financial.
At 0830 BST, the FTSE 100 was up 0.6% to 7,365.34, while the pound was down 0.3% against the dollar at 1.2868.

Shares in FTSE 100-listed Provident Financial tanked as it issued its second profit warning in two months and announced the resignation of its chief executive and the withdrawal of its dividend as the rate of progress in the turnaround of the home credit business has been "too weak".

Petrofac slipped after announcing the sale of its 50% stake in the Panuco oil field in Mexico to Schlumberger, while Wood Group nudged down following weaker-than-expected first-half earnings.

Nevertheless, there were a number of bright spots on the corporate front helping to propel the FTSE higher.

Housebuilder Persimmon gained ground after it reported a 30% improvement in its profit before tax in the six months to 30 June on Tuesday, to £457.4m.

BHP Billiton rallied as it said it swung back to a profit for the full year and upped its final dividend, while Antofagasta advanced after posting a jump in earnings for the first half as revenues rose amid higher copper prices.

Cairn Energy edged higher after saying it swung to a profit in the six months to the end of June.

On the macroeconomic calendar, public sector net borrowing figures are at 0930 BST, while the CBI industrial trends survey is at 1100 BST.

CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson said: "Today's borrowing numbers for July are expected to show a modest increase of £0.2bn, a significant improvement on June's £6.9bn, helped by improved tax receipts.

"We'll also get a look at the latest CBI industrial orders data after an extremely positive number in July boosted confidence in the manufacturing sector, and showed output growing at its fastest rate since the mid-1990s. August is expected to show a slight slowdown to 8 from 10 in July, but nonetheless is expected to largely sustain the positive trend seen a month ago."

Investors will also be looking ahead to the annual banking conference in Jackson Hole, which kicks off on Thursday.

Europe open: Stocks retrace previous day's losses

Stocks are retracing their losses from the previous day as investors bide their time ahead of the start of the US central bank's annual Jackson Hole symposium on Thursday.
As of 0858 BST, the benchmark Stoxx 600 was 0.53% or 1.98 points higher to 374.70, alongside a rise of 0.66% or 79.15 points to 12,145.66 for the German Dax and a 0.50% or 25.50 point advance in the Cac-40 to 5,113.16.

In parallel, euro/dollar was 0.29% lower at 1.1781.

"Calls for a positive European open come following positive leads from Wall Street and Asia, despite relatively low volumes, complemented by the US dollar recovering from 1-week lows overnight ahead of the beginning of the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium on Thursday," commented Henry Croft, research analyst at Accendo Markets.

An index of consumer confidence in the Netherlands ticked higher in August, rising from 25 points to 26, according to the country's Central Bureau of Statistics.

The mean release on the economic calendar for Tuesday was the ZEW institute's index of economic confidence in Germany, which was set to be published at 1000 BST.

Later in the day, the FHFA was set to publish its US home price index for the month of June.

Fabio Cerchiai, Atlantia's chief executive, defended his company's bid for Spain's Abertis, adding that the tollroad operator's shares would continue to be listed on the Madrid exchange if his company's buyout offer went forward.

Air Berlin boss Thomas Winkelmann expected to soon have positive news regarding his negotiations with investors, Handelsblatt reported.

US Market Report

US close: Markets mixed on light trading Monday

Wall Street finished mixed amid light volumes on Monday, as investors kept their wallets closed as both international tensions and domestic political turbulence put a dampener on sentiment.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.13% to 21,703.75 and the S&P 500 added 0.12% to 2,428.37, while the Nasdaq 100 was off 0.08% to 5,786.54.

On Friday, stocks got a brief boost from news that US President Trump had fired divisive chief strategist Steve Bannon, but the main indices ended in the red.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said: "There are, at least, some macro-issues for the Dow et al. to focus on this Monday.

"Firstly there is the military exercises set to be performed by the US and South Korea, something that be only inflame the latter's northern sibling.

"Then there's America's domestic chaos ... the departure of Steve Bannon last Friday gave a slight lift to the markets; however, the constant turmoil of the Trump presidency, epitomised by its laughable turnover of key personal, seriously endangers the tax and infrastructure plans that had been such nectar to the markets earlier in the year."

Investors put their concerns about North Korea to one side last week following events in Washington and terrorist attacks in Spain, but with US and South Korea holding military exercises this week, renewed jitters were expected to set in.

Investors were also wary ahead of the US Federal Reserve's annual symposium at Jackson Hole, which kicks off on Thursday.

In corporate news, Sempra Energy was in focus, rising 1.59% after agreeing to buy Energy Future, the indirect owner of 80% of Texas utility Oncor, beating off Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.

Elsewhere, US-listed shares in Fiat Chrysler were 6.92% higher following reports that China's Great Wall Motor Co is interested in buying the company.

Newspaper Round Up

Tuesday newspaper round-up: Murdoch, Ford, Co-op, QE

A campaigning group opposed to Rupert Murdoch's takeover of Sky is threatening a legal challenge to the media regulator's ruling that the broadcaster would remain "fit and proper" to hold a UK licence if it was snapped up by 21st Century Fox. Activist group Avaaz has hired lawyers and launched the first steps of a judicial review against the communications regulator following its report into the £11.7bn bid by Murdoch's 21st Century Fox for the 61% of Sky it does not already own. - Guardian
Ford has announced a car and van scrappage scheme in a bid to get dirtier vehicles off the roads and boost its sales in the UK's flagging car market. While other manufacturers, including Vauxhall and BMW, have launched scrappage schemes this year, Ford's is unusual in allowing customers to trade in and scrap any brand of older vehicle for at least £2,000. - Guardian

The Co-operative Group will slash its stake in Co-op Bank after shareholders approved a £700m rescue of the lender. Five US hedge funds bailed out the lender and will now largely own it after supplying vital funds to stave off the threat of it being wound up. - Telegraph

Brevan Howard's billionaire co-founder Alan Howard has returned to London after seven years in Geneva, resurfacing in the City just as it fights to retain its crown as Europe's financial centre post-Brexit. One of Britain's wealthiest fund managers, Mr Howard moved to Switzerland in 2010 - a time when many in the City were lured over by the low tax environment - and stayed there until this past weekend. - Telegraph

The former Treasury mandarin who oversaw the introduction of quantitative easing eight years ago has described money printing as "heroin" for policymakers and said it was "time to move on". Lord Macpherson of Earl's Court was permanent secretary to the Treasury when the Bank of England began QE in March 2009 to stave off depression and prevent deflation. Since then, what was an emergency tool has increasingly become standard practice. - The Times

The former chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group and one of his top lieutenants are suing the bailed-out lender for hundreds of thousands of pounds in unpaid bonuses in a move that risks sparking public outrage. Eric Daniels and Truett Tate, former head of the wholesale banking division, this month filed legal claims with the High Court against the bank. - The Times

London close: Stocks flat ahead of Jackson Hole amid geopolitical nerves

London stocks ended on a mixed note at the start of the week as investors remained cautious amid geopolitical tensions.
The FTSE 100 was marginally lower, slipping 0.07% or 5.10 points to close at 7,318.88, while the pound was up 0.2% versus the dollar at 1.2900.

In parallel, the second-tier index finished the session up by 0.10% or 20.44 points to 19,646.90.

Investors put their concerns about North Korea to one side last week following events in Washington and terrorist attacks in Spain, but with US and South Korea holding military exercises this week, renewed jitters were expected to set in.

IG analyst David Madden said: "Tensions between the US and North Korea are still simmering away in the background. The two nations are locked in a stalemate, and this week we will see the US and South Korea engage in their 10-day military exercises. The annual exercise always angers the North Korean regime, this time the stakes are higher given the current environment."

Market participants were also keeping an eye on developments across the pond after US President Trump fired divisive chief strategist Steve Bannon on Friday and ahead of the US Federal Reserve's annual symposium at Jackson Hole, which kicks off on Thursday.

Back in the UK, Rightmove said overnight that house prices fell 0.9% in August, marking their biggest month-on-month decline of the year. On an annual basis, prices ticked up 3.1% from a 2.8% increase the month before. Meanwhile, the average house price fell to £313,663 from £317,421 in July.

In corporate news, Rathbone Brothers's confirmation that it was in exclusive merger talks with stockbroker Smith & Williamson failed to give the stock a boost, while TBC Bank was in the black after posting a rise in interim profit.

Hikma Pharmaceuticals was boosted by an upgrade to 'hold' from 'underperform' at Jefferies.

On the downside, Provident Financial was the biggest faller on the FTSE following an article in the Sunday Times suggesting that some of the city's most powerful hedge funds have built up significant short positions in the subprime lender amid speculation it is set to issue another profit warning and cut its dividend.

Real estate investment trust Shaftesbury finished flat after saying it has entered into a contract with PMB Holdings to acquire a long-leasehold interest in 90-104 Berwick Street, London W1, at £38.5m, while British Land lost ground as HSBC cut the stock to 'hold' from 'buy'.

The departure of Steve Bannon last Friday gave a slight lift to the markets; however, the constant turmoil of the Trump presidency, epitomised by its laughable turnover of key personal, seriously endangers the tax and infrastructure plans that had been such nectar to the markets earlier in the year. In other words, any more developments may impact the Dow and dollar."

In corporate news, Sempra Energy was in focus after agreeing to buy Energy Future, the indirect owner of 80% of Texas utility Oncor, beating off Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.

Elsewhere, US-listed shares in Fiat Chrysler were higher following reports that China's Great Wall Motor Co is interested in buying the company.

Europe close: Stocks down on euro gains, geopolitical angst

Stocks finished the day lower amid aggressive rhetoric out of North Korea as the US and South Korean militaries kicked-off their annual 10-day joint exercises and a bounce in the single currency's value.
Acting as a backdrop, traders were waiting on an upcoming gathering of central bankers from around the world at the Federal Reserve bank of Kansas City's Jackson Hole symposium at the end of the week.

As of the close, the benchmark Stoxx 600 was 0.40% or 1.48 points lower to 372.72, alongside a 0.82% or 99.20 point drop in the Dax 30 to 12,065.99 and a 0.52% or 26.56 point fall in the Cac-40 to 5,087.59.

In parallel, euro/dollar was higher by 0.47% to 1.1814 while front month Brent crude oil futures were 1.84% lower to $51.77 a barrel on the ICE.

At the weekend, Pyongyang said the joint Ulchi-Freedom Guardian excercises were "reckless behaviour driving the situation into the uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war."

To take note of, the prior two editions had led to provocative acts from the North, be it in the form of test-firing missiles or even small incursions into South Korean territory.

"The manoeuvres have prompted a hostile reaction from Seoul's neighbours to the North, claiming that a 'merciful strike' will be unleashed upon the US territories of Guam and Hawaii," said Henry Croft, research analyst at Accendo Markets.

To take note of, according to the Journal, European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi would use his appearance at the Federal Reserve bank of Kansas City's central banking symposium at the end of the week to set out the case for ending quantitative easing.

That report was at odds with a source-based report Reuters from 16 August according to which Draghi was not intending to provide a fresh steer on policy at Jackson Hole.

Nevertheless, markets and analysts were keen for a better insight into top central bankers' thinking at the current juncture.
On the economic calendar for Monday were the results of the Belgian central bank's consumer confidence suvery for August at 1500 BST.

It's an M & A Monday

China's HNA Group purchased a 16.2% stake in Swiss airport retailer Dufry AG from Singapore's sovereign wealth funds GIC and Temasek but no deal value was announced.

The transaction boosted HNA's stake in the Swiss outfit to 20.92%.

Meawnhile, Russia's Rosneft and a consortium formed by Trafigura and United Capital Partners each picked up a 49% stake in Essar Oil for $12.9bn.

In other M & A news, AP Moeller Maersk sold its oil and gas unit to French oil major Total for $7.45bn.

London close: Risk aversion grips FTSE, stocks lower on Trump and Barcelona attacks

London's FTSE 100 index fell below a key technical level as Friday's session wore on, with travel stocks leading the retreat after the terror attacks in Barcelona and the large cabal of overseas focused companies hit by the dollar's weakness amid renewed concerns about the US Presidency.
By the close on Friday, the blue chip benchmark was down just over 60 points or 0.86% to 7,327.98. Over in Europe, it was pretty much the same picture with the DAX down 0.29% to 12,165.19, the CAC 40 lower 0.64% to 5,114.15 and the IBEX 35 in the red by 0.52% to 10,389.40.

The pound was down 0.05% on the dollar at 1.2836 and traded 0.35% lower against the euro at 1.0938.

Fanning the selling, according to traders, were the increased political uncertainty in the US due to the deterioration of relations between President Donald Trump and the business community as reports emerged that a third White House panel of business leaders was to be scrapped.

Analysts at Accendo Markets noted that the Footsie had fallen below its 200-day moving average but was closing in on a return to four-month support at 7,300.

"European equities are sharply negative as another major risk-off move grips global markets. Concerns that the White House has burnt bridges with the business sector, hurting the US dollar, has adversely affected UK and German stocks, the majority of which are reliant on foreign earnings," said Accendo's Henry Croft.

With only a handful of FTSE 100 stocks higher, the index was being pulled lower by its heavy weighting of risk-orientated sectors including oil companies, miners and banks, plus a mix of heavily-weighted foreign-focused defensives.

Commenting on the increasingly divisive political backdrop on Capitol Hill, Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, said: "With support peeling away from all sides' investors appear to be coming to the conclusion that the US President is likely to find it even more difficult to achieve anything close to what was expected than was the case at the beginning of this year.

"This of course then begs the question as to whether he'll be able to achieve anything at all, at a time when the political cost of continuing to support him rises with each passing day and each tweet storm."

No significant data releases were published in the UK on Friday.

In the States, the University of Michigan's preliminary reading on consumer confidence for the month of August came in at 97.6, beating analysts' expectations of 94.

Company news was extremely thin on the ground.

Initially leading the fallers were British Airways and Iberia owner IAG and EasyJet as both shed 3% in early trading before paring losses. "As we've seen over the last couple of years in Europe, these kinds of atrocities affect tourism and will hit airline earnings. Investors are concerned that demand will fall over the rest of the year, which was already looking like it would be a tough patch for the industry," said analyst Neil Wilson at ETX Capital.

Tour operators Thomas Cook, Dart Group, and to a lesser extent Thomson Holidays parent TUI, were also hit by the expectations of a dip in demand, as was Merlin Entertainments, owner of Madame Tussauds and various other tourist attractions around Europe.

The stock leaderboard was topped by precious metals miner Randgold Resources. The risk-off trading sentiment and the softening US yield environment is conducive for gold, analysts noted, with the Federal Reserve's indecision having removed a major barrier to the positive gold trend.

Gold was up 0.19% to trade at $1,290/oz. by the close of London, with analyst Craig Erlam noting there seemed to be a number of factors driving the bullish case for the yellow metal: a weak dollar, US political risk, geopolitical risk. The precious metal was seen earlier in the day a touch over $1,300/Oz, a big resistance area, with the $10 drop being seen as technical orders executing. A further weakening dollar coupled with more geopolitical tension, or even just political dissaray in the US, could see the $1,300 mark break, attracting more bids from investors.

Drugmakers AstraZeneca and Merck have been given approval by the US drug administrator to sell Astra's Lynparza ovarian cancer drug in a new tablet form and to a wider range of cancer sufferers, as the pair begin a new partnership on the front foot. The US Food and Drug Administration granted approval for the drug, which is a PARP inhibitor, meaning it stops the actions of the poly ADP-ribose polymerase protein that helps damaged cells to repair themselves.

Reckitt Benckiser said it had completed the $4.2bn sale of its food business, including the French's, Frank's RedHot and Cattlemen's brands, to McCormick & Company. RB said it would use the net proceeds to cut debt.

Mondi and RSA Insurance were two of the few risers after their shares received broker upgrades. Paper maker Mondi was lifted to 'buy' from 'neutral' at Citi, where analysts hiked their target to 2,580p from 2,120p. RSA was moved to 'outperform' from 'sector perform' by RBC Capital Markets, which hoisted the target to 750p from 625p.

US open: Stocks flat heading into the weekend, political ruckus weighs

Wall Street is essentially flat heading into the weekend after the head of the University of Michigan's consumer confidence survey said recent events in Charlottesville were likely to take their toll on sentiment.
Earlier in the day, the White House had announced that National Economic Council director Gary Cohn would not be stepping down, quashing rumours from the previous session which had weighed on capital markets and giving markets a bid.

The announcement followed resignation over the previous sessions of multiple top executives from the various councils and forums set-up by President Trump to tackle some of the key policy issues facing the country.

As of 1600 BST, the Dow Jones Industrials was slipping 0.25% or 63.58 points to 21,692.08, alongside a retreat of 0.16% or 3.73 points for the S & P 500 to 2,426.16 even as the Nasdaq Composite fought to keep its head above water at 6,221.29.

The University of Michigan's consumer confidence index for August improved from a reading of 93.4 for July to 97.6 in August.

However, commenting on the rise survey director Richard Curtin said: "Too few interviews were conducted following Charlottesville to assess how much it will weaken consumers' economic assessments. The fallout is likely to reverse the improvement in economic expectations recorded across all political affiliations in early August.

"Moreover, the Charlottesville aftermath is more likely to weaken the economic expectations of Republicans, since prospects for Trump's economic policy agenda have diminished."

Commenting on the situation in markets, Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda, said: "We're seeing risk aversion in the markets again on Friday, with the possibility of a self-inflicted crisis within Donald Trump's White House and another terror attack, this time in Barcelona, weighing on risk appetite."

To take note of, on Thursday evening Dallas Fed boss Robert Kaplan told an audience in Texas he would like to see more progress on inflation "before I consider another rate increase".

"I'm being patient in terms of another rate increase," he reportedly said.

In other notewrothy remarks from prominent Fed officials, speaking on the same day Mineapolis Fed chief Neel Kashkari said than when deciding when to start unwinding its bond portfolio, the US central bank would take into consideration the state of negotiations on raising the federal government's debt ceiling.

Still on the economic calendar for Friday, Kaplan was set to deliver another speech, followed by a question and answer session, at 1900 BST.

Stock in Deere&Co. lost ground after the manufacturer of construction and farming equipment posted third quarter earnings per share of $1.55, falling woefully short of the $1.93 that analysts had penciled in. At $7.81bn, top line growth also fell short of the Street's expectations.

Sportswear-maker Footlocker shares were sharply lower after delivering weaker-than-expected quarterly EPS of 62 cents (consensus: 90 cents).

Calpine rocketed after the Journal reported that Energy Capital Partners was closing in on a $17bn deal to acquire the power company.

Europe close: Stocks edge slightly higher at the end of the session

Stocks pared early losses as traders digested a terrorist attack on Barcelona overnight and monitored the news-flow coming from the White House.
By the close, the pan-European benchmark Stoxx 600 was down by 0.71% or 2.67 points to 374.20, for a nearly 6% slide since its peak in mid-May, alongside a 0.31% or 38.27 point drop for the German Dax to 12,165.19 and a 0.64% or 32.70 point fall in the Cac-40 to 5,114.15.

Tellingly perhaps, an initial slight bid in traditional safe haven assets faded towards the close such as gold and the yen faded towards the close as reports began to emerge that the Trump administration might be on the verge of letting its chief strategist, Steve Bannon, go.

Despite Thursday night's tragic events in Barcelona, selling in Travel & Tourism stocks was restrained, with the corresponding Stoxx 600 gauge off by 1.49% to 246.37 - albeit near its lows for the session.

Commenting on the market backdrop, Henry Croft at Accendo Markets said: "A tragic terror attack striking at the heart of Barcelona, killing 13, has shaken European futures overnight, while a tweet yesterday indicating that Gary Cohn, Director of the National Economic Council and a critical influence on policy decisions in the White House, had resigned from his post shocked US markets shortly after the open.

"Despite the tweet being deleted and officially denied by the White House, the damage had already been done, and comments suggesting that there was "no smoke without fire" soon emerged."

On the economic front, producer prices in Germany rose by 0.2% on the month in July and by 2.3% on the year, according to the Federal Office of Statistics. In June, producer prices increased at a 2.4% year-on-year pace

Economists had forecast a flat reading on the month and a 2.2% rise year-on-year.

Construction output in the euro area fell by 0.5% month-on-month, according to the Eurostat, although in year-on-year terms it picked-up from a 2.7% clip in May to 3.4%.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the euro area's current account surplus shrank in June from €30.5bn to €21.2bn, according to the European Central Bank.

Stateside, the University of Michigan's preliminary reading on consumer confidence in August was set to be published on 1500 BST.

Meanwhile, on the corporate front, Air Berlin announced the indefinite postponement of its first half results, DPA reported.

Stock in Deutsche Bank was down after the German lender and Bank of America reached a $65.5m settlement on accusations that they rigged the approximately $9trn US government agency bond market.

Roughly 800 shareholders have sued Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena for in excess of €800m, alleging they were misled into investing by erroneous balance sheets and prospectuses.
