London close: Upmarket housebuilders hit as investors digest Autumn Statement

Upmarket housing stocks took a hit but airlines were flying higher as investors reacted to the UK's Autumn Statement on Wednesday.

Shares in Berkeley Group Holdings were 76p off at 2468p and estate agency Foxtons subsided 2.6p to 152.8p as Chancellor George Osborne introduced a new stamp duty regime set to benefit anyone buying a home worth less than £937,000.

But house-builders that build mid-market and cheaper homes were on the up, with Persimmon rising 15p to 1540p, Barratt Developments gaining 7.9p to 458.9p, Bovis Homes advancing 14.5p to 872p and Taylor Wimpey increasing 2.2p to 132.5p.

Measures to abolish air passenger duty for children under 12 lifted airline stocks, with Easyjet ascending 40p to 1668p and International Airlines Group (IAG) 5.8p higher at 466.1p.

Jasper Lawler at CMC Markets said: "The big move higher in airline stocks reflects not just the impact of the cut in APD's for children but also the increased likelihood the UK will follow Scottish plans to scrap it altogether."

The FTSE 100 Index fell 25.47 points to 6716.63 amid downbeat economic news from across the Pond.

Employment in the US grew by 208,000 people in November, according to consultancy ADP, worse than the 222,000 analysts had been expecting.

Meanwhile, Markit revealed the final reading of its purchasing managers' index (PMI) for Eurozone services activity was revised to 51.1 from the initial estimate of 51.3. The composite PMI was also revised to 51.1 from 51.4.

The UK services PMI increased to 58.6 in November from 56.2 the previous month, Markit said. Analysts had expected a reading 56.5.

Investec slashed its target for the share price of Weir Group by 17%, causing the oil services company's shares to leak 29p to 1798p.

But accountancy software firm Sage jumped 18.9p to 422.1p after revealing a 65.3% rise in annual profits to £298m and said it was on track to hit its financial targets for 2015.

Europe close: Stocks mostly higher ahead of ECB policy decision

European stocks finished mostly higher as hopes of further stimulus measures built ahead of Thursday's European Central Bank policy decision.

President Mario Draghi has said the ECB would consider buying government bonds if inflation remained dangerously low for too long.

However, most analysts see the ECB holding back on such a move this week.

"Hopes of a mass bond buying programme by the European Central Bank are likely to be dashed despite earlier remarks made by ECB President Mario Draghi, as Eurozone inflation - currently 0.3% - is less than a fifth of the bank's target of below but close to 2%," said BBA's chief economist Richard Woolhouse

Capital Economics said the ECB may launch full-on quantitative easing this week or in January but warned that even then it may not be enough to turn around the stagnant economy.

In another sign of weakness in the bloc, Markit revealed the final reading of its purchasing managers' index (PMI) for Eurozone services activity was revised to 51.1 from the initial estimate of 51.3. A level above 50 signals expansion.

Eurozone retail sales rose 1.4% year-on-year in October following a 0.5% increase a month earlier, less than the 1.6% gain expected by the market.

The UK services PMI increased to 58.6 in November from 56.2 the previous month, Markit said. Analysts had expected a reading 56.5.

The HSBC PMI for Chinese services rose to 53 from 52.9 a month earlier.

Separate data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Federation of Logistics and Purchasing revealed China's non-manufacturing PMI rose to 53.9 in November from 53.8 in October.

In the US, the ADP Research Institute said employers added 208,000 last month, compared to forecasts of 222,000 and down from 233,000 in October.

The report comes ahead of the Labor Deparment's monthly jobs report on Friday which is expected to show companies added 230,000 non-farm payrolls in November and the unemployment rate held at 5.8%.

ISM revealed its non-manufacturing index rose to 59.3 in November from 57.1 in October, higher than the 57.5 forecast.

Markit's PMI for US services was revised down to 56.2 in November from 56.3, surprising analysts who had expected to see a reading of 56.5.

Nexity, Salzgitter

French real estate services firm Nexity SA slipped as Groupe BPCE sold a 4% stake.

Salzgitter advanced after the steelmaker said insurance policies will cover most losses linked to Russia's discontinuation of its Black Sea pipeline project.

Telenor ASA and TeliaSonera gained after the phone carriers agreed to combine their Danish businesses.

Sage edged higher after reporting an increase in 2014 financial year profits and saying that is was on track to meet targets in 2015.

Brent crude futures rose 0.33% to $70.80 per barrel, according to the ICE.

US Market Report

US open: Markets mixed as ADP data misses expectations and oil stocks continue rebound

US stocks were mixed on Wednesday as the ADP employment results came out lower than expected and the energy sector continued to rebound from the recent drop in oil prices.
The Dow Jones Industrials fell 0.08% early on to 17,865.84, while the S&P 500 rose 0.02% to 2,067.01 and Nasdaq increased 0.12% to 4,761.48.

The US ADP employment report showed private payroll gains of 208,000 in November, undercutting analyst expectations of 222,000. The ADP figures came ahead of the official employment report from the Labor Department later in the week and are often used as a rough guide.

Barclays Research said: "The significant revisions to the ADP employment report limit its usefulness in forecasting; however, we view the slight deceleration in private payroll growth from October as broadly in line with our outlook for private non-farm payroll growth of 190k in Friday's employment report."

Senior US economist Paul Dales from Capital Economics added: "Stepping back a bit from November's data, arguably more important is that both the ADP and official measure of payrolls have risen by more than 200,000 in at least seven of the past eight months."

"We see no reason why that can't continue, thereby forcing the unemployment rate lower and putting more pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates earlier rather than later."

Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate crude futures were rising by 0.8% to hit $67.42 a barrel after Tuesday's drop and over on COMEX, gold futures were moving up 0.46% to $1,204.90.

The dollar was declining against the pound while advancing against the euro and the yen.

In company news, energy stocks were on the rise including Anadarko Petroleum, Devon Energy, Chevron, Occidental Petroleum and Conocophillips.

Mining and construction equipment maker Caterpillar gained following Tuesday's revelation that US construction spending had grown 1.1% in October, beating analyst estimates for a rise of 0.6%.

UnitedHealth Group also advanced after its target was increased by Credit Suisse from $95 to $110 in a research note released on Wednesday.

Broker tips: Oil stocks, Weir, Sage

Madrid-listed Repsol and London-listed Royal Dutch Shell are the best positioned in the current environment, the bank said. It also highlighted upside potential for UK producer BP which has the "biggest opportunity to address the cost base".

Barclays kept an 'overweight' rating on all three stocks.

Investec has slashed its target for the share price of industrial engineering group Weir by 17% from 1,900p to 1,585p, saying that almost every important data point for the company is "trending negatively". It kept a 'sell' rating.

Investec estimates that falling commodity prices - oil, gas and iron ore - will have a big impact on volumes for Weir. "Headwinds are multiple (and growing)," the broker said.

Westhouse Securities has reiterated it 'add' recommendation and 467p target price for Sage Group after the accountancy software firm reported a "decent set of figures" in its annual report on Wednesday.

Westhouse didn't make any changes to its forecasts following the results, but said the figures provided a "degree of reassurance following management change and a period of frustration over perceived lack of clarity and delivery".

London open: UK stocks slip ahead of economic data, Autumn Statement

It was a tentative start for the UK stock market on Wednesday as a lack of corporate news and a string of economic data kept traders on the fence.
Investors were also awaiting the Autumn Statement announcement due out at 12:30 to see what Chancellor George Osborne has in store.Nevertheless, many analysts are predicting it will be seen as a political rather than an economic event, with expectations low for any surprise announcement on funding.

The FTSE 100 was trading 0.1% lower at 6,733 in early deals.

Stocks had finished strongly on Tuesday, bouncing back after a heavy fall the previous session, with shares in the resource sectors rebounding on hopes of stimulus in Europe and China. Speculation about a possible merger between oil majors BP and Shell also boosted the two heavyweight stocks in London, pushing the FTSE 100 to 6,742.10, its highest close since 21 November.

Two separate surveys from China overnight showed that growth in the services sector picked up in November, with both the non-official HSBC non-manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) and the government's non-manufacturing PMI rising to 53 and 53.9, respectively. However, ongoing weakness in the manufacturing sector meant that the HSBC China composite PMI fell from 51.7 to 51.1.

Non-manufacturing PMIs are also due out in the UK, Eurozone and US later on Wednesday. The ADP employment report will also be in focus Stateside as it comes ahead of the all-important non-farm payrolls data on Friday.

Speeches from various members of the Federal Reserve and the central bank's Beige Book were also scheduled for Wednesday evening.

Sage jumps, oil stocks pull back

Accountancy software group Sage was a high riser after it hailed higher annual profits and the achievement of key financial milestones for 2014. The company also said it was on track to hit financial targets for 2015.

Stocks in the oil sector were pulling back after a solid rise the previous session, with Tullow and BG Group both recording losses.

Shares in BP and Shell also retreated after advancing on Tuesday on the back of reports that Shell could launch a takeover bid for its smaller rival. "Such a merger would be a brave move at a time of heightened uncertainty," said analyst Chris Beauchamp from IG, with oil prices currently near their lowest in over four years.

Just Eat, the online takeaway delivery service, dropped sharply after a group of shareholders behind its initial public offering earlier in the year raised £139m by selling a 7.7% stake. The 43.5m shares were sold at a price of 320p, compared with Tuesday's close of 343.05p.

Postal group Royal Mail was also trading in the red after both Credit Suisse and Jefferies reiterated their 'underperform' ratings on the stock.

European stocks gained as speculation over further stimulus by the European Central Bank (ECB) grew ahead of Thursday’s meeting.

The ECB is widely expected to maintain its policy when it meets this week but analysts see the monetary authority moving closer towards full-scale quantitative easing.

President Mario Draghi has said the ECB has agreed to consider buying government bonds if inflation remains too low for too long.

On Wednesday’s economic calendar in the euro-area, Markit revealed the final reading of its purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for services activity was revised to 51.1 from the initial estimate of 51.3. The composite PMI was also revised to 51.1 from 51.4.

Markit will also release data on UK and US services data.

A report at 10:00 London time is forecast to show Eurozone retail sales rose by 1.6% year-on-year in October following a 0.5% gain a month earlier.

The ISM’s index on non-manufacturing activity is projected to rise to 57.5 in November from 57.1 in October.

ADP will publish its jobs report which is expected to reveal US employers added 224,000 jobs in November.

Also Stateside, Federal Reserve official Charles Plosser speaks on the economic outlook in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 17:30 London time. His colleague Lael Brainard will speak on financial stability in Washington at 19:00.

At the same time the central bank also releases its Beige Book, which will outline the outlook on current economic conditions.

The market will be searching for clues as to when the Fed will raise interest rates ahead of the central bank’s meeting on 16-17 December.

In company news, Salzgitter advanced after the steelmaker said insurance policies will cover most losses linked to Russia’s discontinuation of its Black Sea pipeline project.

Sage edged higher after reporting an increase in 2014 financial year profits and saying that is was on track to meet targets in 2015.

Brent crude futures rose 0.77% to $71.09 per barrel, according to the ICE, providing a boost to oil stocks.

The euro dropped 0.41% to $1.2332.

US Market Report

US Close: Stocks are up as markets rebound from oil price drop

US stocks experienced gains on Tuesday amid light economic data as the markets began to rebound from the recent fall in oil prices.

The Dow Jones Industrials increased by 0.58% to 17,879.55, while the S&P 500 rose by 0.64% to 2,066.55, and Nasdaq advanced 0.6% to 4,755.81.

Tuesday's figures revealed that US construction spending grew by 1.1% on the month in October almost doubling analyst estimates of 0.6%.

As well as this, speculation that the European Central Bank (ECB) could soon introduce quantitative easing was raised after President Mario Draghi claimed he would consider buying government bonds if inflation maintains low figures for much longer.

Front month West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 2.56% to hit $67.28 a barrel while the front month Bent crude futures fell 2.39% to $70.85 a barrel. Capital Economics chief US economist Paul Ashworth noted that this will have a positive affect on the US economy overall.

He said: "If crude oil prices remain at current levels (i.e. $71 per barrel for Brent and $69 for WTI), then the retail gasoline price should drop to a seasonally adjusted $2.90 per gallon within a few more weeks. The US is still a large net importer of crude oil, so the recent collapse in oil prices will provide a net boost to real economic growth of about $150bn or 0.8% of GDP."

Over on COMEX, Gold futures for delivery in February 2015 were down 1.61% to $1,198.50 per ounce.

Meanwhile, the US government to-year yield was up by six basis points to 2.29% and the US dollar advanced on the pound, the euro and the yen.

In corporate news, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV rose by 2.99% to 13.09 after Transport Ministry data showed a 5.9% rise in car sales in November in Italy.

Avanir Pharmaceuticals increased by 12.8% to 16.92 after Japan's Otsuka Holdings Co. agreed to buy the Aliso Viejo, California-based drugmaker for about $3.54bn.

Royal Caribbean Cruises was boosted 6.17% to 76.75 after reports were released claiming the cruise company is set to replace Bemis Co. in the S&P 500.

Newspaper Round Up

Wednesday newspaper round-up: Autumn Statement, UK food prices, Schlumberger...

UK Chancellor George Osborne is expected to use Wednesday's Autumn Statement to deliver a near financial injection to Britain's economy by boosting small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) with nearly £1bn. Osborne is predicted to hand an additional £400m over to the British Business Bank and more funding for the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme, which would allow up to £500m in new lending for the 2015-16 fiscal year, according to The Telegraph.

BRC and Nielsen data has shown that food prices fell 0.2% in November compared with the same month last year, the first time this has happen in eight years, "as supermarkets wage a bitter discounting war and the cost of everyday ingredients plunges on the commodity markets", The Times says.

The world's biggest oil services group, Schlumberger, is set to slash its fleet for offshore geological surveys and will take an $800m writedown on the value of its vessels. The marks the first major cutdown in the industry fallout following the recent crude price drop, the Financial Times reported.

Shares in a number of companies involved in the South Stream project dived across Europe after Russia abandoned the $50bn gas pipeline across the Black Sea into Europe, the Financial Times says. Countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary reacted with shock and anger, saying they had received no advance warning despite having substantial financial and political capital invested, the paper said.

Aviva has admitted that there could be job losses when it takes over rival Friends Life in a £5.6bn deal, The Scotsman writes. Chief executive Mark Wilson said it was still "way too early" to estimate the scale of any cutbacks, but said: ""There may be some duplication in roles and headcount reduction,"".

The Financial Times writes that Morgan Stanley "is being credited with the most audacious 'deal steal' seen in years" after a last-minute "snaffling" of a $4.7bn placement Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse presumed they had secured. The deal involved a private placement of shares in Chinese insurer Ping An.

Harris + Hoole, the coffee shop chain part-owned by Tesco, has made a £12.8m annual loss after an rapid expansion which doubled its position to 45 outlets, according to The Guardian.

London close: Big oil merger talk fuels share spurt

Talk of a mega-merger between oil giants BP and Royal Dutch Shell fuelled a bull market in London on Tuesday.
Shares in BP spurted 19.35p to 433.85p and Shell gushed 87p to 2208p as several traders cited market talk of a possible takeover by Shell, although both refused to comment.

The speculation followed tumbling oil prices as Middle East and US oil chiefs go head-to-head in a battle for dominance of the global energy market.

US light crude was about $69 a barrel at the close of trading in London while a barrel of Brent was hovering around $72.5.

Analysts have highlighted the possibility that the drop in prices could trigger falling investment and mergers in the industry.

"BP shares have rallied on the back of enthusiastic buying on talk of Shell's interest in the company," said IG analyst Chris Beauchamp. "But it seems difficult to believe Shell would make such a big acquisition at this difficult time for the oil market."

The talk added about 20 points to the FTSE 100 Index, which closed 85.7 points higher at 6742.1.

Other oil companies benefiting from the chatter included Tullow Oil, up 24.2p at 424.7p, and BG Group, which gained 30.9p to 935.5p.

In economic news, British construction activity dropped to its slowest rate of expansion in more than a year in November, according to data from Markit/CIPS.

European stocks jumped on hopes that the European Central Bank will boost stimulus measures when policymakers meet in Frankfurt on Thursday.

Back in London, confirmation of an agreed takeover of insurer Friends Life by rival Aviva also lifted the mood. Friends Life advanced 8.9p to 375.1p and Aviva increased 0.6p to 500p.

Royal Mail led the Footsie fallers with a 12.6p drop to 405.5p after regulator Ofcom said it was consulting on changing its charges to rivals for using its service, but ruled out regulating direct competitors.

BT rang up 6.1p to 417.9p as rating agency Moody's said the telecoms group's potential acquisition of rivals EE or O2 would likely speed up convergence in the UK fixed line-mobile phone market

Europe close: Stocks mostly higher on ECB stimulus speculation as policy meeting looms

Stocks in the Eurozone were mostly higher as speculation on stimulus measures grew ahead of the European Central Bank's policy meeting.
The ECB, which makes its latest announcement on Thursday, has said it would consider buying government bonds if inflation remains dangerously low for too long.

While most analysts expect the central bank will hold back on further easing at the November meeting, policymakers have unanimously agreed to use "unconventional measures within its mandate" to boost the economy if needed.

"Prospects for ECB quantitative easing are looking higher as policymakers' rhetoric continues to build," according to Jaisal Pastakia, investment manager at Heartwood Investment Management.

Meanwhile 10-year Greek bond yields dropped by two basis points 7.82%, falling for a third day running. It fell as low as 7.79% earlier which comes amid signs that the troubled nation is set to accept a precautionary credit line from the International Monetary Fund as it exits its bailout programme next year.

Moving the market elsewhere, Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude rebounded after reaching new lows following OPEC's decision last week not to cut oil production to address falling prices. Following the pick-up in prices, oil stocks rose, including Afren and Genel Energy.

In the US, Federal Reserve chair Yellen spoke in Washington but made no comment on the current economic conditions or outlook for monetary policy.

Elsewhere in the US, data showed construction spending rose 1.1% in October following a revised 0.1% fall in October, compared to forecasts for a 0.6% increase.

The Institute for Supply Management-New York reported that current business conditions rose to 62.4 in November, up from 54.8 the previous month, more than the reading of 55 predicted by analysts.

BP and Shell gain on merger rumours

BP and Shell rallied on reports that the two oil giants may merge.

Deutsche Lufthansa slumped after saying a pilot strike that began on Monday will affect all routes on Tuesday until midnight.

Friends Life Group jumped after Aviva agreed to buy the company for about ?5.6bn in stock.

Neopost SA declined after saying it expects organic revenue this year will be somewhat stagnant, down from a previous target of 1% to 3% growth.

US Market Report

US open: Stocks edge higher despite retreat in crude futures

The main US stock market gauges were registering small gains on Tuesday in what was expected to be a light day in terms of economic data and as investors continued to digest the recent sharp drop in the oil price.
Speaking at The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council, US Federal Reserve vice chairman Stanley Fischer said the moment for the central bank to withdraw its references to the continuing need to maintain interest rates low for a "considerable time" was nearing.

The Dow Jones Industrials was advancing by 47 points to 17,824, while the S&P 500 was to be seen 9 points higher at 2,062.

The Federal Open Market Committee is weighing economic data as it considers when to raise rates after ending its bond buying programme at its last meeting.

Figures released on Tuesday morning revealed that US construction spending grew by 1.1% on the month in October, ahead of analysts' estimates for a rise of 0.6%.

Meanwhile, hopes that the European Central Bank (ECB) may introduce full-blown quantitative easing soon were raised after President Mario Draghi said he would consider buying government bonds if inflation remains dangerously low for too long.

Bets on the prospect for further stimulus in China had also grown following the release of weak economic data, including a slowdown in manufacturing activity.

Acting as a backdrop, West Texas Intermediate crude futures were slipping by 2.29% to hit $67.42 on NYMEX following Monday's small bounce.

That came as analysts at Credit Suisse cut their forecast for the price of Brent oil in 2015 to $75.25 per barrel from $91.50 previously.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV jumped after Transport Ministry data showed a 5.9% rise in car sales in November in Italy.

Avanir Pharmaceuticals rose after Japan's Otsuka Holdings Co. agreed to buy the Aliso Viejo, California-based drugmaker for about $3.54bn.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: Vodafone, Aviva, Northgate

Following reports the Vodafone (VOD) is exploring a possible combination with Liberty Global, UBS has said the UK telecoms group may have to wait until its shares rise before undertaking such a sizeable deal.
"Near-term, we think the focus for VOD is on driving organic growth, integrating recent acquisitions and executing on Project Spring [investment programme]. Until the VOD share price is notably higher, it may be difficult for VOD to undertake a transformational deal," UBS analysts Polo Tang and Michael Hill said.

Shore Capital has raised questions with Aviva's 5.6bn takeover of Friends Life, after the companies announced the details of the all-share bid on Tuesday.

The broker said that the deal is a "rights issue in disguise" for Aviva, as it reiterated its 'sell' rating on the insurer. It said: "We remain puzzled why Aviva felt the need to do it now. Is it a camouflage for issues within its own internal restructuring and turnaround story?"

Peel Hunt has repeated its 'buy' call for Northgate after the vehicle hire group's interim results impressed the market on Tuesday, with the broker lifting its estimates for the full year.
