London open: Resource stocks give FTSE a boost on Chinese stimulus hopes

A decent rebound in the oil and mining sectors gave London's stocks a strong boost on Tuesday, as the UK equity market recovered after hitting its lowest level in over two weeks.
Resource stocks were being supported early on by a decent performance on Asian markets overnight on hopes of more stimulus in China.

The FTSE 100 was trading 1.2% higher at 6,733 after falling 1% to 6,656.37 on Monday, its lowest since 14 November.

Weak manufacturing figures from China and the Eurozone prompted stocks to fall the previous session, as markets continued to react to the recent plunge in crude prices.

However, West Texas Intermediate oil jumped 4.3% to $69 a barrel on Monday, its biggest one-day jump since August 2012, rallying after falling to its lowest in over four and a half years last week following OPEC's decision not to cut output.

Stocks in China rose to their highest in three years on Tuesday on the back of hopes that the central bank will ease monetary policy further after a surprise interest-rate cut last month. Speculation that the People's Bank of China may lower banks' reserve-requirement ratios gave financial shares a boost in Shanghai.

Tuesday's economic data calendar looked pretty thin, with the UK construction purchasing managers' index and US construction spending the only notable releases.

Oil and mining stocks rise

The resource sectors were in demand on Tuesday with Tullow Oil, BHP Billiton, BG Group, Anglo American, Glencore, BP, Rio Tinto and Shell among the best performers on the FTSE 100, with stimulus hopes in China lifting sentiment.

Even Randgold Resources was making gains despite a downgrade by Nomura to 'neutral'. Gold prices touched a five-week high on Monday.

Insurance giant Aviva has agreed a £5.6bn takeover of rival Friends Life in a deal giving the latter's shareholders just over a quarter of the combined group. Friends Life was rising strongly early on.

Interim results from Northgate were well-received by the market as the vehicle hire group hiked its dividend by over a third and said that trading since the half-year has been "slightly ahead" of expectations. Underlying profits in the first half surged 49%.

St Modwen Properties also rose after the regeneration specialist said full-year profits would be at the top-end of market expectations on the back of an uplift in property valuations.

Royal Mail was out of favour on reports that Ofcom has disagreed with the firm's complaints about competition from rivals in the end-to-end postal delivery market. The company had said that its universal service obligation was being affected by competitors being allowed to cherry pick more lucrative areas.

Europe open: Stocks rise ahead of Yellen speech

European stocks advanced ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen.
Yellen will speak in Washington at 08:30 local time amid speculation over the first interest rate hike.

The Federal Open Market Committee is weighing economic data in considering when to raise interest rates after ending its bond buying programme at its last meeting.

Yellen has said that the Fed is monitoring economic data to assess whether the US is ready for a rate increase. Fellow Fed official Richard Fisher is also due to speak in Washington.

Elsewhere in the US, data may show construction spending rose 0.6% month-on-month in October following a 0.4% decline a month earlier, according to analysts' estimates.

The UK will see the release of the Markit/CIPS construction report. The purchasing managers' index is forecast to drop to 61 in November from 61.4 in the previous month. A reading above 50 signals expansion.

In Europe, the only notable release is the Eurozone producer price index with the main event for this week scheduled for Thursday, the European Central Bank's latest policy decision.

"It is unlikely that further easing action will be taken at this week's monthly ECB policy meeting, but we might see more dovish commentary," according to Jaisal Pastakia, investment manager at Heartwood Investment Management.

"Prospects for ECB quantitative easing are looking higher as policymakers' rhetoric continues to build."

ECB Vice President Constancio last week said that the monetary authority would consider quantitative easing in the first quarter of 2015 if there was no progress.

Meanwhile, oil stocks gained, including Tullow Oil, BG Group and BHP Billiton as Brent crude prices recovered to $72.53 per barrel after falling below $70 on Monday morning.

Friends Life Group rallied after Aviva agreed to buy the company for about £5.6bn in stock.

Neopost SA declined after saying it expects organic revenue this year will somewhat stagnant, down from a previous target of 1% to 3% growth.

US Market Report

US Close: Markets are down after Thanksgiving sales disappoint and oil prices stabilise

US stocks ended in losses on Monday amid underwhelming Thanksgiving weekend figures and weak international manufacturing data.
The Nasdaq fell 1.35% to 4,727, the S&P 500 dropped 0.68% to 2,053.44 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 0.29% to 17,776.80.

US markets were eyeing falls over in Europe after the official Chinese manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to an eight-month low of 50.3 last month.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) US manufacturing index fell to 58.7 in November, declining from 59 the month before but ahead of the 58 estimate.

Capital Economics' senior US economist Pale Dales notes: "We remain optimistic about the outlook for both overall GDP growth and industry, but are not convinced that conditions are quite as good as the ISM index suggests."

The ISM Employment Index also dropped to 54.9 in November missing its 55.8 estimate.

The final reading of the Markit US manufacturing PMI also moved to 54.8, up from a reading of 54.7 but below its 55 forecast, plummeting to its lowest level in 10 months.

In the corporate world, retailers experienced a punishing Thanksgiving weekend. The National Retail Federation claimed that retail spending over the four-day festive period dropped by 11% to mark the second consecutive annual decline for the weekend to 30 November.

"Starting off the US shopping season on a negative note does not instill confidence in the run up to Christmas. Wal-Mart and Target are both licking their wounds today. Traders are instead holding out hope for Cyber Monday," Market analyst David Madden at IG said.

Lots of key retailers were trading losses on Monday including Macy's down 2.65% to 63.19, Sears down 1.75% to 35.47, Amazon.com down 3.73% to 326, Kohl's down 3.51% to 57.53, JC Penney down 5.99% to 7.53, Wal-Mart down 1.515 to 86.22 and Target down 1.69% to 72.75.

Oil prices rose on Monday, stabilising after their recent fall, but the energy sector, still had difficulty. Share prices for Devon Energy increased 1.64% to 59.94, while Marathon Oil rose 0.24% to 28.99 and Conocophillips went up 2.57% to 67.77.

The dollar was down on the pound by 0.64%, the euro by 0.002% and the yen by 0.41%.

Front month West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 4.56% higher at $69.31 a barrel on Monday.

Meanwhile, over on COMEX, gold futures for delivery in February 2015 were up 3.05% to $1,211.50 per ounce.

The US generic government 10-year yield was up 5 basis points to 2.21%.

Newspaper Round Up

Tuesday newspaper round-up: Tesco, Bicester, Rouble...

New Tesco boss Dave Lewis is planning to bring Matt Simister, one of the eight executives suspended after an accounting irregularity, back to the company as he takes direct control of the retailer, the Telegraph has said. Lewis said that Simister had actually "worked tirelessly to resolve the issues we faced", as he confirmed that four of the other eight would be leaving.
The government is expected to reveal that Bicester in Oxfordshire will be the location for a new garden city, the Financial Times writes. Up to 13,000 homes will be built on the fringes of the town over the coming years and could potentially double its population.

The Russian rouble plummeted the furthest it's fallen in once day since 1998 during the default crisis. Capital flight has accelerated, raising the risk of emergency exchange controls and greatly affecting companies currently holding onto more than $680bm in external debt, according to The Telegraph.

The Financial Conduct Authority has toughened regulations for loan brokers as some were found treating customers in a "blatantly unfair" way. The watchdog has claimed it will ban brokers from charging fees and requesting customer payment details unless it provides clear upfront information to people seeking credit, the Financial Times reported.

According to The Times, the US National Transportation Safety Board condemned Boeing for a string of failures that contributed to a fire that grounded its Dreamliner jets for over three months in 2013. "Boeing failed to ensure that the lithium-ion battery was tested under the most severe conditions possible because it made an underlying assumption, which turned out to be wrong, that the effect of an internal short circuit within a battery cell would not cause a fire," the paper said.

London close: Shares drop amid falling oil prices and economic woe

Falling oil prices and downbeat manufacturing data in continental Europe sent London shares into reverse on Monday.
The price of a barrel of Brent crude leaked more than 10% and US light crude was off 11% just after the close in London as Middle East and US oil chiefs continued their stand-off over production.

Shares in Europe were being weighed down by a slowdown in manufacturing growth across the region and in China.

The German purchasing managers index signalled contraction at 49.5, which pushed the Euro-area survey close to contraction at 50.1.

France was still in contraction territory, although it beat expectations, while Spain also cheered economists by expanding further.

The FTSE 100 Index closed 66.25 points adrift at 6656.37 as oil industry losses offset any gains from a slightly faster rate of UK manufacturing growth in November, supported mainly by domestic orders.

Tullow Oil was the biggest faller in the Footsie with a 25.5p drop to 400.5p while oil services group Weir dipped 47p to 1829p and Petrofac slipped 17p to 808p. BP gave up 5.7p at 414.5p.

In the second tier, Afren was 6.1p off at 45.66p and Enquest backtracked 4.46p to 45.11p.

Investors checked out of Intercontinental Hotels Group by 102p to 2608p after UBS downgraded it to a 'sell' from 'neutral' on expensive valuation grounds.

Fund manager Aberdeen Asset Management climbed 7.6p to 457.5p as annual underlying profits inched higher in the year to 30 September despite a "more challenging environment"

Europe close: Eurozone, China manufacturing PMIs weigh on stocks

A slowdown in manufacturing in China and the Eurozone dragged on European stocks on Monday.
In China, the HSBC Holdings and Markit Economics' purchasing managers' index (PMI) on manufacturing fell to 50.3 last month from 50.8 in October, worse than the 50.5 expected by analysts. A reading above 50 signals expansion.

The data adds to concerns about the health of the world's second-largest economy, which recently prompted the People's Bank of China to cut interest rates.

In the euro-area, the final reading of the manufacturing PMI was revised to 50.1 in November from the initial estimate of 50.4. Economists had expected no change.

"As in China, the focus at the moment is on the central bank and what it can do to support growth and slow the decline in inflation, with the Eurozone lying dangerously close to deflation territory," said Alpari UK analyst Craig Erlam.

"The European Central Bank (ECB) has already announced a large batch of measures in an attempt to stop the decline but they don't appear to be working. Following Draghi's comments a couple of weeks ago when he claimed the ECB must do more, the latest policy decision on Thursday should be extremely interesting, with some suggesting that the ECB may be ready to unleash the QE bazooka."

Markit's PMI for UK manufacturing rose to 53.5 in November from 53.3 in October, compared to the forecast of 53.

In the US, Markit's manufacturing PMI in November was revised up to 54.8 from 54.7 previously, compared to forecasts of 55. The reading was in line with October.

ISM's US manufacturing index fell to 58.7 in November from 59 the prior month. However it beat the 58 projection.

Vodafone Group's shares edged lower following reports the company is considering a combination with John Malone's Liberty Global.

US Market Report

US open: Retailers and energy stocks lead Wall Street lower

US stocks opened with moderate losses on Monday as weak global manufacturing data and a disappointing performance by retailers over the crucial Thanksgiving weekend dampened sentiment on Wall Street.
By 10:01 in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.5% lower, the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq dropped 0.9%.

US markets were tracking declines over in Europe after the official Chinese manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell to an eight-month low of 50.3 last month. Meanwhile, the final reading of the November Eurozone manufacturing PMI was unexpectedly revised to 50.1 from the initial reading of 50.4.

The Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) US manufacturing index fell to 58.7 in November, down from 59 the month before but ahead of the 58 estimate.

Meanwhile, the final reading of the Markit US manufacturing PMI was revised to 54.8, up from the flash reading of 54.7 but below the 55 forecast and still at the lowest level in 10 months.

In corporate news, retailers were sold off in early after the National Retail Federation said retail spending over the Thanksgiving weekend fell 11%. This was the second consecutive annual decline for the four days to 30 November.

Heavyweight retailers such as Macy's, Sears, Amazon.com, Kohl's, JC Penney, Wal-Mart and Target were trading firmly in the red.

Oil prices stabilised on Monday after their recent plunge, but that didn't ease the downwards pressure on the energy sector, with Anadarko Petroleum, Devon Energy, Marathon Oil and Conocophillips all out of favour.

Broker Tips

Broker tips: Oil stocks, IHG, Vodafone, Balfour Beatty

A continued drop in oil prices was weighing heavily on the exploration and production sector again on Monday, with stocks dampened further after a number of ratings downgrades by US broker JPMorgan Cazenove.
The bank has cut its recommendations for UK-listed Afren (from 'overweight' to 'underweight'), Enquest (from 'overweight' to 'neutral'), Ophir Energy (from 'neutral' to 'underweight') and Tullow Oil (from 'overweight' to 'neutral').

UBS has downgraded Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza owner Intercontinental Hotels Group from 'neutral' to 'sell', saying that the stock is expensive given its concerns about slowing growth.

In regard to revenue per available room growth in the US, the bank said: "We are not calling the end of the cycle, but we believe it is late enough in the cycle to not pay peak multiples."

Credit Suisse has lifted its target for Vodafone, saying that price erosion is slowing and usage of 4G is accelerating at the telecoms giant.

The bank raised its target for the shares from 220p to 250p and reiterated its 'outperform' recommendation.

The £1bn potential bid by John Laing Infrastructure Fund for Balfour Beatty's public-private partnership portfolio will test the latter's new boss, according to analysts at Canaccord Genuity.

London open: Resource stocks drag FTSE 100 to lowest in over two weeks

The UK stock market started the new week on the back foot after yet more disappointing economic data from China dampened sentiment, with shares in the mining and oil sectors falling sharply.
The official purchasing managers index (PMI) for China came in below expectations at an eight-month low, adding to concerns about the state of the world's second-largest economy.

The FTSE 100 had dropped 0.94% to 6,659 early on. It has not closed below this mark since 14 November when it settled at 6,654.37.

Government data showed that the China manufacturing PMI fell to 50.3 last month, down from October's reading of 50.8 and under consensus forecast of 50.5.

Meanwhile, the final reading of the unofficial Chinese manufacturing report by HSBC confirmed that the sector stagnated in November, with the PMI falling to the 50-point mark which separates expansion from contraction, a six-month low. This was down from a reading of 50.4 in October.

"Today's PMI readings suggest that the manufacturing sector continues to face headwinds," said analysts at Capital Economics. "And while it is too early to look for the impact of last month's rate cut in today's data, it seems unlikely that it will be enough to prevent a further slide in growth."

A host of manufacturing PMIs were also due out in the UK, Eurozone and US on Monday.

Resource stocks fall, Tullow slumps

A sell-off across the commodities markets dampened stocks in the resource sectors on Monday with oil stocks reeling from the continued plunge in crude prices. West Texas Intermediate dropped below $65 per barrel, its lowest since July 2009, while Brent was trading at $67.82, its lowest since October 2009.

Tullow Oil was leading the decline in the oil sector after a downgrade from JPMorgan Cazenove to 'neutral'. The bank more than halved its target for the stock from 1,000p to just 495p.

JPMorgan also cut its ratings for FTSE 250 peers Ophir, Enquest and Afren.

Oil and gas firm BG Group slumped after revising the remuneration package for its new chief executive Helge Lund, following intense pressure from shareholders. The company had originally proposed a £25m package for its new boss, but has now decided to give him £10.6m in shares.

Blue-chip miners such as Randgold, BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Glencore were also suffering heavy losses as metal prices weakened.

Annual underlying profits at asset manager Aberdeen inched higher in the year to 30 September despite a "more challenging environment", as the company hiked its dividend by over a tenth. The stock advanced slightly early on.

Balfour Beatty was on the rise after John Laing Infrastructure Fund announced it is planning to make a non-binding proposal to Balfour's board for its public-private partnership portfolio for around £1bn in cash.

US Market Report

US Close: Markets up as Thanksgiving retailers rise and crude prices plummet

US stocks were up on Friday after an early Thanksgiving close while declining oil companies prompted lower crude prices.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.49% to 17,828.24 while the S&P 500 increased by 5.8% to 2,072.83 and the Nasdaq gained 4.31% to 4,791.63.

As the markets were closed for Turkey-Day on Thursday, early trading returned on Friday for energy shares to play catch-up with Europe as OPEC decided not to slash output. Following the OPEC revelation, oil prices crashed to a four-year low.

"Opinion is divided on whether the fall is good news or bad news, but it looks like the power of OPEC to maintain a balance in the market has been severely weakened, if not broken entirely," said IG market analyst Chris Beauchamp.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 3.74% to $66.53 a barrel and Brent crude dropped 2.86% to $70.56 a barrel.

However, the holiday week has benefit retailers. "Black Friday mania and the boost to consumer spending from falling petrol prices will keep retailers in the frame, while airlines should also feel positive headwinds," Beauchamp added.

In corporate news, various oil companies experienced a sharp decline once OPEC's decision was announced.

Exxon fell 4.17%, Devon Energy plummeted by 7.89% and Chevron went down 5.42%

Meanwhile, lower fuel price projections gave travel stocks a boost. Delta Air Lines rose 5.46% while Southwest Airlines increased 6.47% and cruise operator Carnival gained 4.84%.

Wal-Mart Stores received a boost of 3% after claiming it experienced its second-highest online sales ever on Thanksgiving Day, beaten only by Cyber Monday in 2013.

GoPro shares receded by 1.37% on Friday, dampening the idea that the wearable video camera maker would reach a fourth straight gain.

The dollar gained against the euro, the pound and the yen, while mini-gold futures slid by 2.56% to 1,167.60 points.

Newspaper Round Up

Monday newspaper round-up: Cyber Monday, Co-op, Osborne

Over 25m shoppers are expected to buy gifts online on 1 December, with £451,000 expected to be spent every minute, the Guardian reports.
Analysts expect sales on the first Monday of December, which has been christened Cyber Monday, to reach £650m, with almost 1m shoppers doing half of their Christmas shopping on the day.

The Times says that the Co-operative Bank is expected to fail a crucial test of its financial strength in December and could be forced to fast-track its recovery plan to keep regulators onside. The troubled lender is thought to have acknowledged that it has insufficient buffers to withstand a very severe recession, despite building £1.9bn in extra capital over the last 12 months.

Economists at the EY Item Club have warned that George Osborne might not be able to deliver a budget surplus until 2018-2019, 12 months later than planned, reports the Telegraph. While the economy is growing at a faster rate than anticipated, government borrowing has soared and the government is struggling to cut the deficit because of a "persistent weakness" in income tax receipts.

Wealthy countries have been criticised by Brazil and China for not committing enough money to help poorer nations deal with global warming, reports the Financial Times. Negotiators from both countries said the $10bn that the US, Japan and European countries have pledged was far from the $100bn in annual financing that poorer countries are expecting from 2020.
