In the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere, startups are spending heavily on highway billboard space to spread the word about their brands. While it may seem like an old-school approach, startups say the ads can be both effective and, at times, necessary. Booster, an on-demand fuel delivery service, has raised $56 million in a Series C led by Invus Opportunities. The Silicon Valley-based company, which is currently operating in over 20 cities, plans to use the funding to expand into new locations. Cameo, a Chicago-based venture which connects celebrities to fans who buy their time, attention, and influence for personalized shout-outs and promotion, has raised $50 million in a Series B round led by Kleiner Perkins. Lehi, Utah-based MX, an enterprise banking-focused data analytics platform, has scored $100 million in a round led by Battery Ventures. The financing brings total funding for the nine-year-old company to $175 million. WP Engine, which focuses on hosting and powering WordPress sites, has acquired digital experience platform Flywheel for an undisclosed sum.
